Explosions Destroy Portable Toilet, Stoke Fear in Valencia County Neighborhood
Two explosions late Saturday night destroyed a portable toilet at a construction site and shook houses in a nearby Valencia County neighborhood, leaving residents worried about safety and the possibility of further attacks. The sheriff office described the incident as criminal damage to property and said a firework was found and removed, while a resident discovered an unexploded device at the scene.

Residents of a quiet Valencia County neighborhood woke to the sound of back to back explosions late on December 22, 2025, after a portable toilet at a nearby construction site was destroyed and nearby windows rattled. The blasts were close enough to rattle foundations and leave lingering ringing in ears for some residents, prompting calls to the Valencia County Sheriff s Office.
Jacob McGrath, who lives about a half mile from the construction site, reported the blasts and then walked to the scene to inspect the damage. He described finding one device that had not detonated. "As I'm walking around, I noticed there was a homemade explosive device crammed into one of the crevices of the remaining debris, and it was about an inch-and-a-half wide and maybe three or four inches long," McGrath said. "You could totally tell it was homemade. The bottom was hot-glued together. The fuse was held together with electrical tape."
McGrath and other neighbors expressed concern that the incident could represent more than a single prank, and that the unexploded device suggested a potential escalation in risk to homes, vehicles, and people. "And my fear, as well as a lot of other people in our neighborhood, is that since they're more than likely not to get caught, that this could be a practice run," he said. "It could be a car or a house, or something like that next. So a lot of people are concerned about the nature of the explosion, how loud it was, and the fact that it could happen again."
Valencia County law enforcement categorized the event as "criminal damage to property" in the official report. The report stated "A firework was observed in the portable potty and disposed of" and noted that "Photographs were taken of the damage caused to the portable potty and of the scene. No person, no vehicle of interest at this time." VCSO spokesperson Lt. Joseph Howland told local media the incident was probably caused by "kids with fireworks."
The episode underscores public safety and enforcement questions for Valencia County. Residents say they want clearer information about investigative steps and preventive measures, and they worry about the potential for escalation if perpetrators are not identified. For now the case remains under investigation and authorities encourage anyone with information to contact the sheriff s office so investigators can follow up and help restore neighborhood confidence.
