Valencia County Boards Set Key Appointments and Land-Use Hearings
A series of local government meetings scheduled for late December and early January will determine leadership appointments, procedural rules and land-use decisions across Valencia County. These agendas include city manager and fire chief appointments, county chair selection, a school board reorganization and multiple planning hearings that will shape municipal services and development.

Local governments across Valencia County are moving quickly to fill leadership roles and set policies that will guide municipal services and development in the coming year. Draft agendas filed for meetings between Dec. 31 and Jan. 8 show a concentrated slate of swearing-in ceremonies, appointments and public hearings that will affect city operations, county governance and local land use.
The Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District met at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the visitor’s center at Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area, 2424 N.M. 47, to consider an interim promotion, additional assignments and the resignation of an employee. Personnel changes at the conservation district could influence local stewardship projects and operations on lands managed for wildlife and public access.
Belen’s City Council will hold a swearing-in ceremony at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, in council chambers at Belen City Hall, 100 S. Main St. The council’s agenda includes public comment, an executive session surrounding appointed positions and consideration of nominations and appointments for mayor pro-tem, city manager, city clerk/treasurer and fire chief. The council also will review commissions, affirm city employees and administer oaths for appointed positions. Those appointments will determine day-to-day municipal leadership and oversight of public safety, finance and community programs.
The Los Lunas Board of Education will convene a swearing-in at 5:45 p.m. followed by a special meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, in the central office boardroom at 119 Luna Ave. SE for board reorganization. The Valencia County Commission meets at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, in the commission chambers at 444 Luna Ave. SE, Los Lunas, to consider appointment of a commission chairperson and a lengthy slate of governance items. The agenda addresses public participation rules, Open Meetings Act and Inspection of Public Records Act matters, signature authority, establishment of depositories, delegating authority to the county manager for buildings and property, employee work hours and paid holidays, and appointments to boards and committees. The commission will also consider capital outlay grant agreement No. 25-J5993, revised bylaws for the Valencia County Older Americans Program and the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board, and will hear a report from the Detention Center as well as a presentation from the N.M. Department of Transportation. These procedural and programmatic items will shape county transparency, senior services and juvenile justice oversight while positioning the county for state-level funding and infrastructure coordination.
Planning and zoning matters are concentrated in early January as well. The Los Lunas Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Jan. 7 at Village Hall on a minor subdivision for Daniel Romero at the southwest corner of Crownover and N.M. 314. Agendas are noted as draft until 72 hours prior to each meeting, and meeting locations and times are listed for public attendance.
