Valencia County Firefighters Contain Brush Fire Near Square Deal Road
Crews saved a threatened structure near 78 Square Deal Road after Valencia County firefighters cut containment lines through thick brush and trees with NM State Forestry assisting.

Valencia County Fire Department crews cut containment lines through thick brush and trees near 78 Square Deal Road on Saturday, saving a structure that had been threatened by a rapidly moving brush fire, according to officials.
VCFD units were on scene as the fire spread through dense vegetation in the area of 78 Square Deal Road. Crews worked to establish containment lines around the perimeter, a tactic that proved critical in protecting the threatened structure from the flames. New Mexico State Forestry provided assistance to VCFD during the response.
The department posted to Facebook confirming units were on scene, noting the fire was burning in thick brush and trees and that crews were actively cutting containment. The original report confirmed one structure was threatened but saved through that effort.
The cause of the fire, the acreage burned, and whether any injuries occurred had not been confirmed as of Saturday. It was also not immediately clear what type of structure was threatened or whether any evacuations or road closures were ordered in the surrounding area.

New Mexico has faced persistent brush fire risk across much of the state this season, with dry vegetation and wind creating conditions that allow fires to spread quickly before crews can establish control. Valencia County, with its mix of rural properties and open land, is particularly vulnerable to fast-moving grass and brush fires along roadways and open terrain.
VCFD has not yet released an official statement on final containment status or the total resources deployed to the scene.
