Christine Frye Gosling, a familiar name in McArthur civic life, died May 14 at age 73 after battling cancer, closing a life that was tied closely to the county seat, its schools and its service organizations. She died at home after a career and retirement marked by steady public work, family ties and long-standing local involvement.

Born Dec. 9, 1952, to Glenneth and Geraldine Wrightsel Frye, Gosling grew up in Vinton County and graduated from Vinton County High School in 1970. She later attended Eastern Kentucky University, then built her working life around public service. She retired from the United States Postal Service in 2014 after almost 40 years, serving as a postmaster in a community where the post office has long been one of the most visible links between residents and local government.

Her connection to McArthur extended well beyond her postal career. Gosling was a lifetime member of McArthur Eagles Auxiliary 2279 and served as treasurer of the Vinton Area Ministry until her illness. Those roles placed her inside the network of churches, fraternal groups and charitable efforts that have helped hold together a county shaped by small towns, family connections and volunteer labor.

After retirement, Gosling spent more time with her grandchildren and kept traveling with the people closest to her. She went to Scotland with her daughter Tory and friends, traveled with her high school friends known as the Kiki Sisters, and especially loved sitting on the beach with family and loved ones. She was also known as a devoted Ohio State fan who loved football season and would likely have been found trying to dot the O while watching the Buckeyes.

Gosling is survived by her children, Annie Jackson, John Tyler Gosling and Tory Walker; her grandchildren, Gannon and Tate Jackson and Lexie, Jackson and Leffie Christine Walker; her sister, Roxanne Perdue; nieces and a nephew; and several special friends from McArthur and Zaleski. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Tamara Crewey, her grandson Porter Walker and the father of her children, John Gregory Gosling.

Visitation will be held May 19, followed by a celebration of life May 20 at McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Memorial contributions are requested for McArthur Wyman Park, a fitting gesture in a village where Wyman Park has served as a gathering place for county milestones, including Vinton County’s 175th birthday celebration. Vinton County was formed in 1850 from parts of Ross, Gallia, Jackson, Hocking and Athens counties, and McArthur has been the county seat since that year. Gosling’s life reflected that long local history, where public servants, family networks and community groups still shape how the county remembers its own.
