Vinton County baseball edges Paint Valley, Adena in tight wins
Vinton County kept turning tight games into wins, edging Paint Valley 2-1 and Adena 7-6 as the spring schedule tightened.

Vinton County is giving its late-season push a real edge, squeezing out a pair of one-run baseball wins and pairing them with a come-from-behind softball victory that has the Vikings moving with purpose into the final stretch.
The baseball team beat Paint Valley 2-1 on Friday, May 8, then survived another nail-biter Monday, May 11, by topping Adena 7-6. Those results show a group that is handling the kind of pressure games that usually decide whether a season keeps building or starts slipping away.

That pattern only sharpened two days later, when Vinton County shut out Belpre 3-0 on Wednesday, May 13. Three wins in less than a week, including two by a single run, gave the Vikings a clear sign that they are doing enough in the late innings, on the mound and at the plate, to keep themselves in the conversation as the schedule gets crowded.

The rush of games has been part of the story, too. Vinton County’s late-April and May baseball slate included matchups with Meigs, Paint Valley, Trimble, Fisher Catholic, River Valley, Gallia Academy, Chillicothe and Piketon, a compressed run that left little room to coast. In that kind of stretch, every inning matters, and the Vikings have been answering with results rather than style points.

Softball added its own momentum to the week. Vinton County beat Meigs 5-4 on Friday, May 8, a game that came through a late rally and an aggressive call. The win was Vinton County’s third straight at home and pushed the Vikings to 10-9, a mark that keeps them steady as they head toward the finish. It also stood as their closest win over Meigs since April 25, 2022.

Taken together, the scores pointed to more than isolated results. Vinton County’s baseball team was finding ways to close out one-run games, while the softball program was showing it could rally under pressure and hold onto home-field momentum. For McArthur and the rest of Vinton County, those are the kinds of wins that can turn a crowded spring calendar into something worth watching all the way to the end.
