Vinton County schools update supply lists ahead of back-to-school shopping

Vinton County Local School District has updated its suggested school supply lists for Central, South and West schools, giving families a clear starting point before back-to-school shopping begins. The district says the lists are suggestions, not mandatory, and it has placed them in its quick-links area alongside the district calendar, student handbook, parent and student forms, the Vinton County Resource Guide and VC Online Academy.

The middle-school list is described by the district as a general list compiled by teaching staff, but it also warns that students may need specific items for individual classes after they receive their schedules. Among the practical details: corded headphones are listed for Chromebook use, and bookbags are to be clear or mesh. The list also says extra supplies and bookbags are to be kept in lockers during the school day, a detail that can affect what parents buy and how students carry their materials.

The high school list, updated June 22, 2026, adds another layer of planning for families with older students. It includes grade-level and course-specific supplies such as binders, dividers, loose-leaf paper, graph paper and optional calculators for some classes. That means the cost of outfitting a high school student may vary more widely depending on schedule and class load than it does at the elementary level.

The timing matters because the 2026 Ohio Sales Tax Holiday will run from 12:00 a.m. Friday, August 7 through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 9. During that window, clothing priced at $75 or less per item, school supplies priced at $20 or less per item and school instructional materials priced at $20 or less per item will be exempt. Ohio also says there will be no expanded sales tax holiday on items priced at $500 and under this year.

State guidance defines school supplies to include binders, book bags, calculators, folders, notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, rulers and scissors. School instructional materials include reference books, reference maps and globes, textbooks and workbooks. The Ohio Society of CPAs says the 2026 holiday returns to its original three-day format after running 10 days in 2024 and two weeks in 2025, and that the narrower version was enacted as part of House Bill 186.

The same guidance says the exemption is applied item by item, store discounts can bring an item below the price cap and qualifying online purchases are exempt if completed during the holiday window. For Vinton County parents trying to spread out expenses before school starts, those details turn a routine supply list into a chance to plan purchases around a short but useful savings period.
