Vinton County explodes for 10 runs in third, blanks Piketon 14-0
Vinton County broke the game open with a 10-run third inning and shut out Piketon 14-0, holding the Redstreaks to two hits on the road.

Vinton County turned a nonconference game into a blowout with one crushing third inning, scoring 10 runs to pull away from Piketon and finish with a 14-0 shutout. The Redstreaks managed only two hits as the Vikings controlled the game from the middle innings on and never let the home side regain footing.
That third-inning burst was the turning point. Once Vinton County started stacking contact and pushing runs across, the gap widened fast, and the game shifted from competitive to out of reach. A two-hit night for Piketon pointed to a pitching and defensive effort that kept the Redstreaks off balance, while Vinton County’s output showed the kind of timely offense that can turn a road game into a statement.

The win fit a strong late-season run for the Vikings, who were 9-7 overall and 6-4 in Tri-Valley Conference Ohio play, good for third in the league. Vinton County had already posted two other shutouts in 2026, beating Wellston 10-0 on April 17 and Alexander 14-0 on April 29, a sign that the pitching staff and defense have given the lineup chances to play from ahead.

For Piketon, the loss was a sharp reversal after a 23-4 win over West Union on May 13. That contrast underscored the problem the Redstreaks face as the schedule tightens: when one inning gets away from them, the margin can disappear quickly, especially against a team that can keep pressure on every at-bat.

The result also carried local weight for two programs rooted in their school communities, with Vinton County High School in McArthur and Piketon High School in Piketon both competing under Ohio High School Athletic Association rules. For Vinton County, the challenge now is consistency, carrying the same sharp execution from one night to the next as the Vikings move deeper into the season.
