Vinton County National Day of Prayer moves to high school cafetorium
After 25 years on the courthouse steps, Vinton County’s prayer gathering shifted to the high school cafetorium, giving the observance a more school-centered feel.

Vinton County’s National Day of Prayer looked and felt different this year as it left the courthouse steps for the Vinton County High School Cafetorium, a move that placed the county’s public prayer service inside another familiar civic space and changed the tone of an event long rooted downtown. The observance was held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 7, and was organized by Renovate Life Church of God with the Rev. James Dimel of McArthur serving as host.
The shift mattered because this was not just a change of scenery. For 25 years, residents had seen the county’s National Day of Prayer gathered at the courthouse, where the setting underscored government and civic life. At the high school, the focus widened to another daily institution that shapes the county’s future, especially for families, students and the people who work around the school. The evening still centered on prayer for Vinton County, the nation and the institutions that guide local life, but the cafetorium setting gave the service a more community-based feel.

The program moved through a series of prayers and remarks aimed at government, the military, media and arts, business, education, church and family. That structure made clear the gathering was intended as a countywide reflection, not simply a devotional service. Musical selections from Andrea Minton and Brianna Blankenship added to the evening, with Blankenship’s performance of Power in Prayer among the featured moments.

Jim Griffith’s prayer brought a more urgent note to the service, touching on military families and conflict involving Iran. That linked the local observance to larger concerns facing many Vinton County households with relatives serving or watching national events closely. The national theme for 2026, Glorify God Among the Nations, Seeking Him in All Generations, came from 1 Chronicles 16:24, and the National Day of Prayer Task Force said this year marked the 75th observance and the 250th year since the founding of the United States.

The National Day of Prayer has been observed on the first Thursday in May since President Ronald Reagan fixed the date in 1988, after the tradition began in 1952. In Vinton County, the move to the high school, the added music and the range of civic concerns showed an observance that is still deeply local, but also tuned to a broader sense of uncertainty and responsibility.
