Vinton County schools set three makeup days in June
Vinton County schools locked in June 1-3 as the last makeup days, giving families a final school-year schedule after eight weather cancellations.

The Vinton County Local Board of Education settled the district’s remaining calendar question at its regular monthly meeting, approving Monday, June 1, Tuesday, June 2 and Wednesday, June 3 as the last makeup days for students. That means June 3 will be the final day of school for Vinton County Local Schools, a date families can now build childcare, work schedules and summer plans around.
The decision matters because the district already used February 16 and March 13 as makeup days and has been forced to keep adjusting after a heavy winter of missed classes. Local reporting showed Vinton County lost eight school days during the 2025-26 weather disruptions, including Jan. 7-10, Jan. 22, Feb. 11-12 and Feb. 20. Ohio districts are allowed five calamity days before additional time must be made up, which left the board little room to maneuver once the district went beyond that limit.
For parents, the June dates bring some certainty after weeks of shifting schedules, but they also mean the school year will run into the first week of June. Students will not be in school on April 3, April 6, May 5 or May 25, and the district has already adjusted around several previous closures. That puts pressure on working families in Vinton County, where many households depend on fixed shifts, limited childcare options and summer schedules that often begin as soon as school lets out.
The board’s action settled the student calendar, but staff scheduling is still being worked out. The district said it is working with both unions to establish a plan that meets contractual requirements, underscoring the difference between student attendance days and employee duty days. That distinction can shape transportation, meals, extracurricular coverage and pay arrangements long after the classroom calendar is set.
The meeting where the makeup days were approved was held at South Elementary School. The district’s next regular board meeting was listed for Monday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Central Elementary School in McArthur, giving residents another chance to hear how Vinton County Local Schools is handling the end of the year and the staffing details still being negotiated.
