Seven dogs are listed on the Vinton County Dog Shelter’s Petfinder page, and the county facility says it is consistently over capacity. That is the pressure point behind Thursday’s adopt-a-dog event, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m. at 31479 State Route 93 in McArthur and is designed to move more dogs into homes before another week of feeding, cleaning and kennel turnover adds to the strain.

Dog Warden Michael Klein is opening the afternoon with a family-friendly setup that includes door prizes, coloring for children, face painting and meet-and-greets. County listings say the shelter accepts dogs only, not cats, and visits are by appointment only; residents can call 740-596-9285 to schedule a time to view dogs or arrange a home pickup. The shelter’s listed adoption fee is $35, and it includes the current-year dog license, DHLPP vaccines, a microchip, flea and tick treatment, wormer, leash and collar, plus a $100 fee waiver for spay or neuter at a local veterinarian office.

One of the dogs waiting is Louie, a senior pit bull terrier listed as needing an experienced adopter. Louie puts a face on what this event is meant to do: each adoption clears kennel space, reduces the daily workload tied to feeding and cleaning, and helps a shelter that is trying to keep up with stray dogs across the county. The shelter’s mission, as posted on its adoption pages, is to shelter stray dogs in Vinton County and place them in good homes.

The shelter’s needs extend beyond Thursday’s event. In December 2024, Vinton County National Bank announced a $5,000 donation to the Vinton County Dog Shelter Building Fund and collected supplies including food, treats, cleaning supplies, toys, leashes and collars. That support reflects the broader reality in Vinton County: adoption events help, but shelter capacity, staffing pressure and basic operating needs remain a county service issue, not just a weekend promotion.
