Wellston blanks Vinton County 9-0 in TVC-Ohio showdown
Lyla Pittenger threw seven shutout innings as Wellston beat Vinton County 9-0, stretching its winning streak over the Vikings to 14 games.

Lyla Pittenger left Vinton County with little room to breathe in McArthur, and the Vikings never found an answer. Wellston’s ace threw seven shutout innings, allowed no earned runs and helped the Lady Rockets roll past Vinton County 9-0 in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division game on Friday, April 18.
The loss was more than a bad afternoon for the Vikings. It extended Wellston’s winning streak over Vinton County to 14 games, a run that has turned this matchup into a repeated stress test for a program still trying to climb back toward its old TVC-Ohio standing. Vinton County fell to 6-5, while Wellston improved to 10-4 and carried a six-game winning streak into and out of the conference showdown.
Pittenger did damage at the plate as well as in the circle, going 3-for-4 with a home run. Abrielle Weese added another jolt for the Lady Rockets, finishing 1-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Ella Hutchinson also chipped in with her first double of the season, underscoring how thoroughly Wellston controlled the game from both the mound and the batter’s box.
For Vinton County, the problem was not just the final score. A shutout in a league game usually means the offense never forced enough pressure onto the base paths, and Wellston’s pitching and defense kept the Vikings from stringing together the kind of innings that can change a conference game. The 9-0 result also recalled an 11-0 loss to Wellston in April 2025, another sign that this rivalry has been lopsided across multiple seasons rather than just on one night.
That matters in a TVC-Ohio race where every conference game carries weight. Vinton County has spent recent seasons trying to regain the competitiveness it once had in the league after improving from 4-18 to 10-14 last year, and games like this show how far the Vikings still have to go before the standings catch up to the program’s goals. The next meeting with Wellston, listed on the Vinton County Local School District’s 2025 softball schedule for April 25, had already been circled as another chance to measure progress against one of the league’s most familiar hurdles.
