Chapel Hill man charged with attempted murder after Raleigh Union Station assault

Two Amtrak conductors were attacked at Raleigh Union Station, and the assault has escalated into an attempted murder case at one of downtown Raleigh’s busiest transit points. Raleigh police said several violent incidents happened at the station on Friday, raising immediate safety concerns for workers and passengers at 510 West Martin St.

Court documents named Terence J. Kiernan, of Chapel Hill, as the suspect. By Saturday, he was facing an attempted murder charge tied to the attack, after police said he tried to kill a man during the Friday incident at the Amtrak station. The case also included charges connected to the assault on the two conductors.

Raleigh Union Station is a major downtown hub where rail passengers, employees and visitors pass through the same space. That concentration of people makes any violent confrontation there more serious than a routine disturbance, especially when the targets are transit workers responsible for keeping service moving.
