Man Charged With Murder After Deadly Raleigh Apartment Complex Shooting
A 36-year-old man died at 1820 Walnut View Road after a Saturday night shooting, and police charged Donte Young with murder at the scene.

A southeast Raleigh apartment complex became a homicide scene after police say Donte Young, 42, was charged with murder in the shooting death of Tyrone Vandyke, 36, at 1820 Walnut View Road. Raleigh police said Young was detained at the scene without incident after officers responded to the complex near Rock Quarry Road and Cross Link Road.
Officers were called shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, April 18, and found Vandyke suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Police gave first aid until EMS arrived, then Vandyke was taken to WakeMed, where he later died. Investigators said Young was found in possession of a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting and was transported to the Detective Division for further investigation and questioning before being charged.
Police said Vandyke and Young knew each other and were involved in a verbal altercation before the gunfire. That detail suggests the deadly encounter grew out of a personal dispute rather than a random attack, but investigators have not released a motive and have not said whether the shooting happened inside or outside the apartment complex. The case remains active, and additional charges could still be filed as detectives continue to gather evidence.
The shooting adds fresh attention to a busy residential corridor in southeast Raleigh, where many residents live in close quarters and depend on fast police response when conflicts turn violent. Raleigh police also maintain a public crime-data portal and incident map built from NIBRS records, giving neighbors a way to compare this area with past reported incidents dating back to June 2014. For families in the Walnut View Road area, the homicide is a stark reminder that a dispute can turn fatal in seconds and leave a whole complex dealing with the aftermath.
