The Poe Center's PlayWELL Park cut the ribbon on a $1.6 million renovation March 10, returning one of Raleigh's most unusual playgrounds to full operation with a suite of new structures designed around human biology.

The 1.5-acre outdoor space, which draws more than 30,000 school children and local families each year, originally opened in 2004. Its central premise has always been distinctive: every slide, climb, and structure is themed around body systems and health science, turning recess into anatomy. The renovation preserved and expanded that concept with equipment that is both more elaborate and more durable than what it replaced.

The most prominent addition is the "Between-The-Ears" ZipKrooz, a 41-foot zipline structure built around a giant head. The feature includes talk tubes positioned inside the ears for sound exploration, with mulch surfacing below for safety. Alongside it, a DNA Helix Climbing Tower and a cell-themed climbing structure give visitors two new ways to engage with molecular biology at playground scale.

Not every element of the renovation was built from scratch. The Lickety Split Slide, one of the park's existing features, received refreshed paint, an improved retaining wall, and an updated slide. The Poe Center noted that those changes were designed specifically to preserve the trees and foliage surrounding the structure. The park's treehouse, now called the Rib Rise Treehouse, was also updated as part of the project. Interactive sidewalk art rounds out the new additions.

Seymour, the Poe Center's mascot, is incorporated into the park's "Search with Seymour" feature, continuing the educational programming thread that runs through the entire site.

The Poe Center describes PlayWELL as a resource meant to connect health education with imaginative play, and the renovation was framed as an investment in that mission's continuity. "Renovations will ensure that PlayWELL Park continues to be a place for imaginative educational play for future generations," the center stated on its website. The full source breakdown for the $1.6 million has not been publicly detailed; the Poe Center's website continues to solicit donations toward the renovation goal, and the organization is also encouraging community and corporate partners to support the park's growth.
