Raelyn Phillips said she did not even want a prom sendoff. Her Raleigh family had other ideas, turning the moment into a lavish celebration built around her plans to attend Howard University and the pride of seeing a local teenager on the edge of graduation.

The sendoff was shaped with help from Demetris Faizon, owner of De’Veilope Events in Raleigh, which helped transform what could have been a standard pre-prom stop into a full-scale production. Phillips, a high school senior who said she is headed to Howard, was celebrated in a way that reflected both her family’s support and the growing appetite in Wake County for milestone events that feel bigger than the occasion itself.

That matters in a county where prom and graduation season has become a major spring ritual. Thousands of high school seniors move through ceremonies in May and June, with downtown Raleigh venues hosting large gatherings that can bring traffic, crowds and a steady stream of families marking the same rite of passage. In that setting, a prom sendoff is no longer just about pictures. For many families, it has become a statement of identity, spending and celebration.

Howard University gives that moment added weight. Founded in 1867, the private historically Black research university has long described itself as “the Mecca,” a place where students go not just for classes but for a larger sense of purpose. For Phillips, the sendoff became a way to honor that next chapter before she leaves home and heads to Washington, D.C.

Faizon’s role also fit a longer Raleigh story about how local event businesses have built reputations by turning family occasions into experiences. De’Veilope Events was established nearly 20 years ago, and Faizon has said he comes from a musical, performing-arts-inclined family and began by organizing seasonal celebrations through church and community service. He later founded Hearts for Blooms, a nonprofit that repurposes luxury floral arrangements from events and gives bouquets to people in need.

For Wake County, the sendoff was more than a viral-style moment. It showed how local businesses, family networks and community pride now shape the way residents celebrate everything from prom night to college departure, with Raleigh companies helping make those occasions feel personal, theatrical and expensive enough to be remembered.
