A 15-year-old boy died Saturday after being shot at his home on the 1400 block of Springshire Court near Sunnybrook Road in southeast Raleigh, with his family confirming the death and Raleigh Police announcing a juvenile suspect was taken into custody late Friday night.

Officers responded around 11:50 a.m. to the cul-de-sac neighborhood following a report of a shooting and found the teen with a gunshot wound. The boy's family told ABC11 he had succumbed to his injuries. His father, described as heartbroken, told ABC11 the victim was his only child.

The shooting drew an hours-long police investigation that consumed the quiet residential street. Neighbor Ozzie Abrams said he struggled to process what had happened just steps from where the boy lived.

"It was so shocking," Abrams said. "Cayden got shot, and I said, oh. At his own house ... at his own house."

Abrams offered three words to summarize the loss: "Too soon."

Raleigh Police confirmed a juvenile suspect was in custody, though no charges, age, or additional details about the arrest were immediately released. Earlier police statements indicated the victim was alive when officers arrived and that his injuries were initially believed to be non-life-threatening, but the family's later confirmation of his death reflects the severity of his condition. The investigation remains ongoing, and police said additional details will be released as they become available.
