Wake County marks Breastfeeding Awareness Month with family support push

Wake County used an Aug. 3 county post to highlight breastfeeding support for local families, saying Wake County Public Health will host a series of events, educational opportunities and resources throughout August. The county linked the message to Best Baby Wake, its collective-impact program for children ages 0 to 5, which is focused on improving birth outcomes, reducing infant mortality and improving children's health.

The county’s breastfeeding support page says August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month and says Wake County Public Health is proud to join the nationwide effort to highlight the importance of breastfeeding for families. The U.S. Breastfeeding Committee also identifies August as National Breastfeeding Month, with the 2026 theme RISE: Resilience, Interdependence, Self-Determination and Empowerment.

Wake County’s events calendar already included a Breastfeeding Support Fair on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It also lists a Golden Hour Breastfeeding Support Group, a WIC Breastfeeding Fair and a Breastfeeding Essentials Training. Best Baby Wake and Eastern AHEC are offering a free Breastfeeding 101 class for community members and professionals, adding another point of entry for parents, caregivers and health workers who need practical guidance.

The county’s population health page says Wake County works to eliminate health disparities among all populations living in the county, and its maternal and child health page says it provides essential resources, support and services to promote healthy pregnancies, safe deliveries and strong starts for children and families. That gives the August push a broader purpose than a calendar observance, with services aimed at families across Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, Garner and Holly Springs who may need local support close to home.
