A woman was killed before dawn Sunday on Glenwood Avenue near Westborough Drive in north Raleigh, after police said a southbound 2017 BMW 320 sedan struck her in the travel lane just before 3:45 a.m. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, and police said impairment is not suspected.

Officers and emergency crews rushed to the intersection as darkness still covered the corridor, where police noted lighting was limited. The woman was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Glenwood Avenue remained closed for several hours and reopened shortly after 7 a.m., while an N.C. Department of Transportation alert around 4 a.m. said all eastbound lanes were closed on U.S. Highway 70 near Westborough Road during the response.

The crash adds to the long list of serious incidents on Glenwood Avenue, one of Raleigh’s busiest north-south corridors. In 2024, a fatal pedestrian crash was reported near the 8700 block of Glenwood Avenue, and in 2019 another pedestrian died near Triangle Drive. The road has also seen other overnight wrecks that disrupted the area, including a February 2026 crash in the 8400 block that damaged power lines and left hundreds without electricity.

Those repeated crashes have sharpened attention on a roadway where traffic moves quickly and pedestrians can be hard to see in the dark. Raleigh’s Vision Zero program says the city’s goal is to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2040, and city leaders are working on a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan funded by a $1 million Safe Streets and Roads for All grant signed July 25, 2023, with completion targeted for late fall 2025. City data tied to that effort show Raleigh recorded 59 traffic fatalities in 2022, including 24 pedestrian deaths, and 51 of those fatalities occurred on NCDOT-maintained roads.

Statewide, pedestrian danger remains severe. North Carolina recorded 335 fatal pedestrian crashes in 2024. In Raleigh, the Glenwood South Safety Pilot has already focused on the pedestrian experience along Glenwood Avenue from North Street to Johnson Street, underscoring that the city has identified the corridor as part of its broader safety work. Raleigh Police crash locations data, which go back to 2015, may show whether this stretch of Glenwood Avenue has become a repeat danger point as investigators continue to examine the exact position of the pedestrian, the car’s speed, lighting and roadway conditions.
