A bathroom exhaust fan sparked a late-night fire Saturday at Daybreakers Cafe, the nearly 20-year family-owned diner at 10800 N. Frontage Road, sending smoke and flames visible from the roofline before Rural Metro crews contained the blaze in under ten minutes.

Crews arrived before 10:30 p.m. on March 29 to find smoke and flames coming from the roof. They deployed ladders and multiple hose lines, attacking the fire from above and extinguishing it entirely, confining all damage to the bathroom where it started. Rural Metro confirmed the cause: a faulty exhaust fan inside the bathroom. No injuries were reported. Crews remained on scene afterward to check for hotspots.

The swift containment limits what could have been far greater structural damage, though inspectors will still need to evaluate water, smoke, and heat impacts throughout the building before Daybreakers can reopen.

Daybreakers Cafe has been a Foothills fixture since September 2006, founded by three women and one man and built into a full-service diner with breakfast served all day, lunch, dinner, a cocktail lounge, and homemade pies and ice cream. With the S. 4th Ave. location currently closed, the N. Frontage Road cafe is the family-owned brand's only active outlet. Any extended closure would directly affect staff and the regulars who have made it a Nextdoor Neighborhood Favorite across 11 Yuma-area neighborhoods.

The fast response reflects the infrastructure Rural Metro built specifically for the rapidly expanding Foothills corridor. Fire Station 10, at 12535 South Foothills Blvd., opened in April 2024 equipped with a ladder truck acquired to handle the growing number of multi-story commercial structures in the area. Fire Chief Melissa Hilpert said at the opening that the Foothills had grown "exponentially" in the preceding three to four years.

Saturday's incident is the third fire RMFD has responded to in the Foothills since late February, following a mobile home fire on S. Dorothy Drive on February 25 and a major blaze at the Yuma Liquidation Store on Foothills Boulevard on March 3 that injured a firefighter and required mutual aid from the Yuma Fire Department.

The exhaust fan origin is a practical reminder for any Foothills business: ventilation equipment in restrooms and kitchens warrants regular inspection and servicing. For updates on Daybreakers' status, call (928) 342-2110 or visit daybreakerscafeyuma.com.
