A driver filling a 14-gallon tank once a week in Yuma County is now spending roughly $67 more per month on gas than they were 30 days ago. That number, arrived at by the math of a $1.20-per-gallon jump over a single month, is what the current pump average actually costs at the household level.

AAA placed the Yuma County average for regular unleaded at $4.20 per gallon as of March 27, up from roughly $3.00 just 30 days earlier. The 40 percent surge in a month left residents frustrated and searching for explanations.

Patrick Rylee, speaking to KYMA in Yuma, offered the local verdict plainly: "It's like there's no running away from it. You're gonna find expensive gas all throughout the country and it's unfair."

The cause is traceable to global markets. U.S. military engagement with Iran pushed crude oil above $100 per barrel and tightened supply corridors that feed domestic fuel prices nationwide. By March 31, the national average crossed $4.02 per gallon. Arizona's statewide average climbed even higher, leaving Yuma below it, though that comparison means little to a household recalculating its budget mid-month.

The strain extends beyond personal vehicles. Delivery drivers, tradespeople running multiple job sites daily, and agricultural operators logging high mileage through planting season absorbed the same $1.20-per-gallon hit with no mechanism to pass it on quickly. A commercial vehicle burning 25 gallons a day adds roughly $660 to its monthly fuel expense at current prices compared to 30 days ago.

Prices across Yuma County vary by station, sometimes by 20 cents per gallon or more on the same day. GasBuddy's current listings showed stations near 1825 S. 4th Ave. and 2600 S. Araby Rd. tracking at $3.99 per gallon, 21 cents below the county average. AAA's online fuel tracker and GasBuddy both update daily and allow ZIP code searches covering stations in central Yuma, Fortuna Foothills, Somerton, and San Luis.

A few habits reduce exposure: comparing station prices before fueling, consolidating errands into single trips, keeping tires properly inflated (underinflated tires reduce fuel economy noticeably), and carpooling on fixed-schedule commutes to employers such as Yuma Regional Medical Center or Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. Cash pricing at some stations runs a few cents per gallon below card rates, a discount that adds up across a month of fill-ups.

If prices hold near current levels, residents who made driving decisions based on a $3 average will be managing a new baseline for the foreseeable future.
