Yuma County Officers Carry Flame of Hope for Special Olympics Athletes
Officers from dozens of Yuma County agencies carried the Flame of Hope along Highway 95 Thursday, following last year's $14,000 fundraising push for Special Olympics athletes.

The Flame of Hope traced a path from San Luis to the Colorado River on Thursday, carried by officers from across Yuma County's law enforcement community in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
Staging began at 6 a.m. on Main Street near the roundabout in San Luis. Officers then carried the flame north along Highway 95 to First Street in Yuma before concluding around 10 a.m. at Colorado River State Historic Park, a roughly four-hour relay that crossed multiple jurisdictions and drew participants from federal, state, municipal, military, and corrections agencies.
The 2026 run brought together the Yuma Police Department, Yuma County Sheriff's Office, Somerton Police, San Luis Police Department, U.S. Border agencies, MCAS Yuma, Yuma Proving Ground police, and several other agencies, making it among the broadest multi-agency community events the county stages each year.
The stakes of that turnout are measurable. The Yuma Police Department alone raised more than $14,000 through last year's torch run, funds directed toward helping local Special Olympics athletes and their chaperones travel to state and national competitions. The 2026 run is a push to sustain and build on that figure.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a national movement connecting first responders with disability advocacy, but its local impact is concrete: travel stipends, equipment, and competition registration fees for Yuma County athletes who depend on that support to reach the regional and national stage.
Thursday's relay also served a purpose beyond the dollar total. Carrying the flame along one of the county's main corridors, with officers from San Luis to MCAS Yuma moving together through public streets, put inclusion at the center of the event rather than at its margins.
