Yuma Launches Free Christmas Tree Recycling Program December 26
The City of Yuma opened its annual live Christmas tree recycling program on December 26, providing free drop off sites at the Yuma Civic Center and the North Gila Transfer Site through January 4. The effort aims to reduce landfill waste and repurpose trees in partnership with the Arizona Game and Fish Department to improve local fish habitat.

The City of Yuma began a weeklong live Christmas tree recycling program on December 26, offering residents free and convenient options to dispose of holiday trees while supporting local waste reduction and habitat projects. Residents may drop off live trees at the northeast corner of the Yuma Civic Center parking lot at Desert Sun Drive and Avenue A from 6 a.m. to 5 30 p.m. through January 4. County and city residents may also use the North Gila Transfer Site at Avenue 7E and County 5th Street, open 7 a.m. to 2 30 p.m. on the same schedule.
The program accepts live trees only. All lights, ornaments, tinsel, and decorations must be removed before drop off. Artificial trees will not be accepted. A message board and cones will guide traffic into and out of the drop off area at the Civic Center. The site operates as self serve, and if a resident cannot place a tree inside the container they may leave it on the ground and City staff will place it into the program.
Collected trees will be recycled for standard green waste processing, and some will be repurposed through a partnership with the Arizona Game and Fish Department to support fish habitat improvement projects in local waters. That collaboration illustrates cross agency resource management, turning post holiday debris into ecological infrastructure for area waterways.
For residents this program reduces waste disposal costs and diverts large organic material from landfills, an outcome with fiscal and environmental implications for municipal services. The limited operating hours and self serve model create trade offs between resource efficiency and accessibility, particularly for residents with mobility challenges or limited work hour flexibility. City staff availability to handle trees left on the ground mitigates some accessibility concerns, and residents seeking additional assistance may contact Public Works at 928 373 4500 or visit YumaAz.Gov for details.
Continuing the program each year supports community engagement with municipal sustainability goals and demonstrates local government coordination on environmental stewardship. Participation over the holiday period directly contributes to waste reduction and to tangible habitat improvement work in Yuma County waters.
