2-Year-Old Killed, Adult Injured After Vehicle Strikes Pedestrians Near 4th and Channel

A 2-year-old child was struck and killed and an adult was injured Friday night near the intersection of 4th and Channel streets in San Francisco, San Francisco Police Department officers said. San Francisco Police Department officers were called just before 9 p.m. on Friday to the area of 4th and Channel streets on reports of the collision and found the child and an adult injured at the scene, according to a department statement.

Police said officers responded to the area of 4th and Channel streets at around 8:55 p.m. regarding a crash; an investigation determined a driver struck an adult and a 2-year-old child who were crossing the street, per SFPD reports. The two victims were taken to a hospital, where the child was declared dead and the adult was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities have not released the names, ages beyond “2-year-old,” or gender of the victims. KTVU reported that “authorities did not elaborate on the relationship between the adult and the child,” while Mayor Daniel Lurie’s office issued a statement noting the injured adult was the child’s mother. “I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of a two-year-old child in last night’s crash in Mission Rock, and my thoughts are with the family during this unimaginable time. My heart is also with the child’s mother, who was injured in this incident,” Lurie said.

Investigators say the driver remained on scene and cooperated with officers. “The driver of the car stayed at the scene and cooperated with an investigation into the crash,” and “The SFPD said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision,” according to department communications cited by local outlets.

The crash is being reported from adjacent neighborhood frames: local reports and public statements variously describe the site as SoMa, Mission Bay, Mission Rock or “near Oracle Park,” but all accounts place the collision at or very near the 4th and Channel intersection. City traffic investigators and the SFPD have not yet released whether the pedestrians were in a marked crosswalk, whether traffic signals were in operation, or whether any vehicle damage or speeds have been documented.

Several key details remain unconfirmed and are being sought: the identities of the child and the injured adult and whether the family has authorized release of names; the driver’s identity, license status and whether any citations or arrests were issued; make, model and plate of the vehicle; whether security or traffic cameras captured the collision; the SFPD case or DR number and the investigating unit; the hospital treating the adult and the time of death pronouncement; and whether the SFPD Traffic Collision Investigation Unit will release preliminary findings.
