Cody Jensen, founder and CEO of Searchbloom, makes the sharpest case in Clutch’s April 16, 2026 piece: visibility is no longer just a ranking problem, it is a usability problem for intelligent systems. AI agents and large language models are scanning, summarizing, and filtering pages before a human ever clicks, which means a site can technically rank and still miss the discovery layer that now shapes attention.

That is the strategic shift agency leaders need to absorb. The work is no longer only about getting a page into the results, but about making the page legible, trustworthy, and usable to a machine that has to extract meaning fast enough to recommend, cite, or route the next action.

SEO still matters, but the standard has moved

Jensen does not argue that SEO is dead. He argues the opposite: SEO is still the foundation of answer engine optimization, but the bar is higher because the page has to work for both people and systems. In practical terms, that means a page needs a clear topic, obvious structure, and verifiable information if it is going to be selected by AI-driven tools.

That is why clutter hurts more now than it used to. A page packed with vague copy, weak headings, and unfocused messaging makes it harder for AI systems to identify what the page is about, who it is for, and whether it deserves to be surfaced. Clean navigation, a tight subject focus, fresh reviews, and action-oriented page elements help a site look like a reliable source instead of a pile of text.

What changes at the page level

Structure comes first

For agencies, the most useful way to think about agentic web optimization is page design, not abstract strategy. The page should answer a question quickly, present its main entity clearly, and keep supporting detail in sections that are easy to parse. If a service page, product page, or local landing page buries the main point under marketing language, it becomes much harder for an AI system to summarize correctly.

Strong topic focus matters because machines are good at pattern recognition and bad at guessing intent from fluff. A page that cleanly separates a service description, proof points, pricing cues, and next steps gives both a human visitor and a reasoning model a better shot at understanding the offer.

Retrieval readiness is now part of the job

Clear structure is only half the battle. Pages also need to be retrieval-ready, which means the information has to be easy to extract, verify, and reuse. That is where fresh reviews, concrete service details, and explicit page elements start to matter as much as the copy itself.

This is where the agency conversation changes. A site is no longer just a destination for traffic; it is an input source for AI-mediated discovery. If the page does not clearly state what the business does, where it operates, why it is credible, and what action the user can take, it is easier for an agent to skip it in favor of a page that is more explicit.

Machine-actionable content is the new advantage

The strongest pages do more than inform. They give machines obvious signals to work with, such as structured data, clear entity references, and content that is organized around specific tasks or decisions. That is exactly the kind of material AI systems can use to compare options, summarize a service, or choose a next step.

This is why partner selection and content clarity belong in the same growth conversation. When a page is built to be machine-actionable, it supports lead generation and conversion at the same time it supports discovery. The best-performing sites are not just persuasive; they are operational.

Google’s own guidance points in the same direction

Google Search Central has long framed SEO as helping search engines crawl, index, and understand sites, and its structured-data guidance says markup helps Google understand page content and entities such as people, books, and companies. Google also says its automated ranking systems are designed to prioritize helpful, reliable, people-first content. That lines up closely with Jensen’s argument that machine-readable, useful pages now have an edge.

Google’s AI layer adds more urgency. AI Overviews launched in Search in May 2024, and Google said in August 2025 that AI in Search was driving more queries and higher-quality clicks while still sending billions of clicks to the web every day. Google has also said links in AI Overviews can get more clicks than if the same page had appeared as a traditional web listing for that query.

The traffic story is more complicated than the hype

Pew Research Center’s March 2025 analysis shows why agencies need to treat this as a two-layer problem. In July 2025, Pew reported that 58% of respondents conducted at least one Google search that produced an AI-generated summary, and about 18% of all Google searches in the study triggered one. Pew also found that users were less likely to click links when an AI summary appeared and very rarely clicked the sources cited in the summary.

Search Engine Land’s reporting on the same research adds another useful detail: 88% of the AI summaries Pew analyzed cited more than three sources, and Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit were among the most cited sites. That matters because it shows what kinds of sources AI systems tend to elevate, and why content has to be both useful and easy to attribute if it wants a place in the summary layer.

OpenAI’s agentic search model raises the stakes

OpenAI’s documentation helps explain why this shift is happening so quickly. It describes web search as a built-in tool for models and distinguishes agentic search as a process where a reasoning model actively manages the search process. That means the machine is not only retrieving results, it is deciding how to search, what to trust, and which pages are worth carrying forward.

For agencies, that turns content design into a discovery strategy. Pages that are easy to crawl, easy to summarize, and easy to verify are better positioned for that kind of agentic behavior. Pages that are thin, scattered, or vague will keep losing ground even if they still appear in traditional rankings.

The practical agency playbook

The best response is not a separate AI search silo. It is a tighter page standard across the whole site.

  • Build each page around one clear topic, one clear audience, and one clear action.
  • Use structured data where it helps Google understand the entity, service, or organization on the page.
  • Keep headings, copy, and navigation aligned so a machine can trace the page’s meaning in seconds.
  • Add fresh reviews, proof points, and specific service details that make the page easier to trust.
  • Make the next step obvious, whether that is booking, calling, comparing, or requesting a quote.
  • Remove vague filler that adds word count but not meaning.

That is the real shift agentic web optimization demands. The winning sites will not just rank well, they will read cleanly to humans and machines at the same time, and that is where visibility is headed.
