AI chatbot advice gains traction as retirees weigh risks, benefits
Retirees are turning to chatbots for planning help, but the line between useful and risky is still sharp.

AI’s appeal in retirement planning
The draw is easy to see: chatbots are quick, available at any hour, and comfortable with the kind of repetitive questions that often slow down retirement planning. Recent reporting says roughly 20% of Americans now use AI chatbots for financial advice, and survey results from Empower show why the trend is accelerating. In that survey, 56% of people said they would use AI to recommend money moves for retirement, while 61% said they would use AI alongside a human financial adviser.
That same data also points to the limit of the technology. Even as AI gains ground, 62% of Americans still said they value the human component of financial advice for major financial decisions. The message is not that people want a machine to replace the adviser; it is that many want a tool that can sit beside the adviser and do some of the heavy lifting first.
Where chatbots can help
Used carefully, AI is genuinely useful for the early stages of retirement planning. It can help organize a budget, explain basic concepts in plain language, simulate different savings or spending scenarios, and act as a research assistant that pulls together information from several sources. For someone trying to understand contribution limits, a withdrawal concept, or the difference between a traditional and Roth account, that can save time and reduce confusion.
This is where the technology is strongest: speed, structure, and repetition. A chatbot can help you compare two budgeting approaches, outline a retirement checklist, or draft a list of questions to take to an adviser. It can also help you think through simple “what if” scenarios, such as how changing your savings rate might affect your long-term outlook.
Where the risk starts
The danger appears when a chatbot is treated like a decision-maker instead of a starting point. Retirement planning is not just about arithmetic; it depends on taxes, Social Security timing, sequence-of-withdrawals decisions, health costs, life expectancy, and the emotional pressure that comes with spending down assets after decades of saving. Those are not edge cases. They are the core of the job.
AI can miss the nuance in those choices. It may produce confident answers without fully accounting for tax brackets, penalty rules, beneficiary issues, or the interaction between different income streams. It also cannot replace fiduciary judgment, which is the ability to weigh a client’s full financial picture and obligations before recommending a course of action.
Andrew Lo of MIT Sloan School of Management has argued that AI can help with retirement planning, but that people still need to stay educated and remain responsible for their wealth until AI can truly bear that responsibility itself. That is the central risk: convenience can create a false sense of certainty.
Why regulators are paying attention
The government is already treating this as more than a consumer-tech trend. FINRA’s 2025 Annual Regulatory Oversight Report, released on January 28, 2025, identified artificial intelligence as an emerging risk area in financial services. That matters because the problem is not only what a chatbot says to a retiree; it is also how firms use AI internally, how they supervise it, and what controls they put around it.
The SEC Investor Advisory Committee held a panel in Washington, D.C., on March 6, 2025, titled “Disclosure of Artificial Intelligence’s Impact on Operations.” The SEC later said the committee’s work is focused on investor interests and protecting investors and market integrity. That is a clear signal that AI in finance is now an institutional issue, not just a consumer preference. The question for regulators is whether firms can explain how AI is shaping advice, sales, and operations before harm occurs.
FINRA’s broader industry data also provides context: there is still a large licensed advice ecosystem in place, which means AI is entering a market that already has rules, supervision, and professional obligations. In that environment, the key policy issue is transparency. Investors need to know when they are receiving machine-generated help, human advice, or some combination of the two.
A practical rule of thumb
A chatbot is safest when you use it for information gathering and organization. It becomes far riskier when you use it to make irreversible decisions. That line is especially important in retirement, where mistakes can be hard to undo.
- Safe uses include budgeting, scenario comparisons, plain-language explanations, and drafting questions for an adviser.
- Higher-risk uses include deciding when to claim Social Security, choosing withdrawal order, estimating taxes, or determining how much income to take from investments.
