Amazon pledges €33.7 billion to Spain for AWS data centers and AI manufacturing
Amazon will invest €33.7 billion through 2035 to expand AWS infrastructure, build AI server plants in Aragón, and boost Spain's cloud and AI capacity.

Amazon announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that it will spend €33.7 billion in Spain through 2035, adding €18.0 billion to a 2024 pledge and directing new capital to AWS data centers, server manufacturing and AI machine‑learning support facilities in Aragón. The company framed the plan as a long-term expansion of cloud and AI capacity across Spain and Europe.
The figure equals roughly $39.82 billion, Morningstar reported. Amazon’s corporate statement, posted on its channels and cited by Aboutamazon, said in part: "We're supporting Europe's digital capabilities and expanding cloud and AI infrastructure that businesses and organizations are already using to grow and innovate. Our investment will create meaningful opportunities for Spanish citizens, including high-skilled jobs and community initiatives, while advancing water stewardship and promoting carbon-free energy projects. This is a long-term bet on Spain, and we're proud to make it."
Planned projects cited by Amazon and reporters include a server manufacturing plant, a manufacturing fulfillment warehouse, and an AI/ML server assembly and repair facility in Aragón, alongside broader supply-chain facilities to support data-center operations across Spain and Europe. AWS first opened its Europe (Spain) Region in Aragón in November 2022; company materials and RTTNews note those data centers have operated on 100 percent renewable energy since then. Amazon also said it is pursuing water stewardship initiatives with a target to be water positive by 2030.
Amazon and local reporting tied the investment to measurable economic effects, though figures vary by source. RTTNews and En Ara Cat reported the company expects the expansion to add about €31.7 billion to Spain’s GDP through 2035. Aboutamazon specified that more than half of the impact — €18.5 billion — would accrue to Aragón’s regional GDP. Job projections differ by scope and methodology: RTTNews said the plan will support nearly 30,000 full‑time equivalent jobs annually across local businesses in Spain and cited 1,800 additional supply‑chain jobs in Aragón; En Ara Cat reported an average of 29,900 full‑time jobs annually including direct, indirect and induced employment and said 6,700 are direct roles from Amazon’s investment; Aboutamazon estimated 13,400 full‑time equivalent jobs annually in Aragón, of which 4,200 are direct FTE positions. Reporters at MWC said Amazon Vice President of Legal Affairs David Zapolsky announced the additional €18.0 billion.
The Spanish government welcomed the news, with En Ara Cat summarizing the reaction under the headline "Spain is a safe bet." Local outlets showed Minister Óscar López alongside Amazon representatives; Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted on social media but the full text of his message was not available in the summaries reviewed.
Analysts placed the move in a wider hyperscaler capex surge. Morningstar noted Amazon expects about $200 billion in capital spending this year and that Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Google and Oracle plan to spend more than $700 billion collectively. Techbuzz Ai called Amazon's Spain commitment "one of the most significant cloud infrastructure commitments in European history," highlighting regulatory demand for European data sovereignty and the need for AI compute capacity.
Journalists should note source differences in job and GDP tallies: numbers reflect varied geographic scopes and definitions of direct versus indirect and full‑time equivalent employment. Amazon and the Spanish government can provide the underlying methodology and timeline for a consolidated accounting.
