Anthropic posted on its Claude status page Monday that it was investigating "elevated errors," after thousands of users reported being unable to access the company’s chat, developer and code-assistant services. Downdetector recorded more than 2,000 problem reports, and social media and status-monitoring sites were flooded with complaints from users across India, Europe, Africa and the United States.

At 6:49 a.m. ET the company flagged issues affecting Claude Opus 4.6, Claude Console and Claude Code, according to Mashable. TechCrunch quoted Anthropic’s status message saying, "The issues we are seeing are related to Claude.ai and with the login/logout paths." Users posted HTTP 500 errors, failed login attempts and frozen prompts, and some reported complete site downtime, according to BeInCrypto and other monitoring posts.

TechCrunch and other outlets described the outage as widespread, reporting that "Anthropic experienced widespread disruptions on Monday morning, with thousands of users reporting problems accessing Claude services." Gregory Zuckerman reported that the Claude API continued to operate for many customers even as web and console flows failed, and TechCrunch similarly noted that API access appeared to be working as intended. Reporters and users disagreed about whether Claude Code was affected in every account; some outlets listed it among impacted components while others said it remained operational.

Anthropic engineers shifted to remediation quickly. "Engineers say a fix is being implemented, but the root cause has not yet been disclosed," Zuckerman wrote. Company status updates and industry monitoring indicate that the company rolled out fixes and that services returned to normal within hours, though Anthropic had not disclosed a public, detailed postmortem at the time of reporting.

Site reliability engineers interviewed in reporting traced the problem to authentication paths and session management logic, a class of failure that can lock users out even when compute backends are healthy. SRE commentary in Gregory Zuckerman’s coverage noted that login and logout flows often become hot spots because they combine cryptography, third-party callbacks and multiple data stores; if any step slows or returns inconsistent state, users can be locked out while AI endpoints continue serving requests.

The outage arrived amid a surge in Claude’s consumer traction and heightened political scrutiny of Anthropic. TechCrunch noted Claude’s climb to the top of App Store charts over the weekend, and reported that the company has been engaged in contentious negotiations with the Pentagon. That backdrop amplified the reputational stakes for an incident that interrupted developers and enterprise teams relying on Claude for workflows.

For businesses and teams that integrate conversational assistants into day-to-day operations, the disruption was a reminder that authentication and orchestration layers can be single points of failure. Industry monitoring sites and user reports suggest most users were able to resume work after the fix, and competing models such as ChatGPT and Gemini appeared to be largely unaffected during the incident, according to BeInCrypto, which said those services had resumed normal operation despite isolated complaints.

Anthropic’s status page provided the first public signal of the disruption and the language used there guided much of the early reporting. Journalists and customers will be watching for a formal incident report that reconciles conflicting accounts about which services were impacted, what triggered the elevated errors and what steps Anthropic will take to prevent similar outages as usage grows.
