At least 10 people were taken to hospitals after gunfire erupted at a party at Arcadia Lake near Edmond, sending emergency crews across the Oklahoma City metro as police worked to account for everyone who was hurt.

Edmond police said the shooting happened about 9 p.m. Sunday during a gathering of young adults at the lake. Officers said ambulances transported at least 10 victims to hospitals, but the total number injured could be higher because other people may have reached medical care in private vehicles.

Police had no suspects in custody late Sunday and said there was no known threat to the public. Officials also had not released the victims’ conditions or said whether anyone was killed as the investigation continued overnight into Monday morning.

Emily Ward, a spokesperson for the Edmond Police Department, said authorities received multiple reports of shots being fired near Arcadia Lake at about 9 p.m. Investigators were still sorting out what happened in the moments before the shooting and how many people were involved.

Witnesses told KOCO 5 that a fight may have broken out before the gunfire, but police had not confirmed that detail. The setting, a large party near the lake with young adults gathered outdoors, added to the challenge of determining who was present, who was injured and who left the scene before officers arrived.

A reunification center was set up at the Walmart near Interstate 35 and 15th Street in Edmond so families and friends could look for information about those who attended the gathering. The response reflected the uncertainty that often follows fast-moving violence at large outdoor events, where crowds disperse quickly and witnesses may leave in different directions before officers can secure the scene.

The shooting added another episode to a familiar pattern for public safety officials: weekend and holiday gatherings that draw large crowds outdoors can turn volatile in an instant, leaving police and medics to manage confusion, injured victims and a search for answers at the same time.
