Britney Spears enters treatment after DUI arrest in California

Britney Spears has entered a substance abuse treatment facility after being encouraged by several people close to her, a move that came just over a month after her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The 44-year-old singer’s representative said the decision followed a difficult stretch that has kept her under intense public scrutiny since the March arrest in California.

California Highway Patrol officers received a report that a BMW was driving fast and erratically on U.S. 101 in Ventura County near the Los Angeles County line. Spears was stopped, found to be the sole occupant of the vehicle, and later showed signs of impairment before field sobriety tests, authorities said. She was booked around 3 a.m., and the case was turned over to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office on March 23.

Prosecutors were expected to decide whether to file charges before a court date scheduled for May 4, 2026. The arrest drew immediate attention because Spears has spent years trying to reassert control over her life after a long legal fight over her personal and financial affairs. Her 13-year conservatorship ended in November 2021, closing an arrangement that had governed much of her life and money since 2008.

Spears’ representative previously described the arrest as “completely inexcusable” and said it should be the first step in “long overdue change” in her life. Kevin Federline, Spears’ ex-husband and the father of her two adult sons, also responded through his attorney, saying he is supportive and happy she is getting help.

The treatment decision lands as Spears has largely stepped back from her music career. She has not toured in nearly eight years and has not released an album in nearly a decade, a striking absence for an artist whose public life has repeatedly become part of a larger national conversation about fame, autonomy and recovery.
