Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea's £107 million midfielder and club vice-captain, will sit out the next two matches after head coach Liam Rosenior said the Argentine's public comments about Madrid had crossed a line the club was not prepared to overlook.

The suspension covers Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge against League One Port Vale and the following Premier League fixture against Manchester City on April 13. Port Vale, who eliminated Sunderland in the fifth round to reach the last eight, now face a Chelsea side without one of their most prominent names.

Fernandez gave the club two reasons to act. In the aftermath of Chelsea's 8-2 aggregate Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain, he openly cast doubt on his future: "There are eight games left and the FA Cup. There's the World Cup and then we'll see." He compounded the unrest during the international break by saying on a podcast that he would "like to live in Spain, I really like Madrid. It's similar to Buenos Aires," fuelling widespread speculation over a summer move to Real Madrid.

Rosenior confirmed the ban on Friday after speaking with the player earlier in the day and made clear the decision was not his alone: "I spoke with Enzo about an hour ago. As a football club, with me as part of the decision, he won't be available for tomorrow's game or Manchester City next Sunday. It's disappointing for Enzo to speak that way. I've got no bad words to say about him but a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build."

The head coach stressed the sanction had been agreed at every level of the club and was corrective rather than permanent: "In terms of the decision, it's not all about me, or the sporting directors, the ownership, the players. We are aligned in our decision. The door is not closed on Enzo. It's a sanction. You have to protect this club and culture, and in terms of that, the line was crossed in the international break."

The damage is deepened by timing. Chelsea had already lost successive Premier League games to Everton and Newcastle following the PSG exit, leaving Rosenior's side under acute pressure with the season at a critical juncture. Port Vale FA Cup hero Ben Waine said the pressure was "all on Chelsea" ahead of Saturday.

Fernandez was not alone in creating friction during the break. Defender Marc Cucurella said Chelsea had "paid the price" for their inexperience against PSG and that Enzo Maresca's departure had "a big impact on us." Maresca left around New Year's Day 2026 after the club concluded he had effectively engineered an exit by entering talks over replacing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Cucurella also said a Barcelona move would be "hard to refuse." Rosenior classified him as a "separate case," attributed the comments to passion for the club, and confirmed he would play on Saturday.

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel delivered a blunt public verdict, saying Fernandez was "not a leader." Players within the dressing room are also reported to be growing frustrated with his conduct as vice-captain during recent matches, while Chelsea insiders were said to be equally disappointed with the Argentine Football Association for failing to prevent such candid public commentary about a potential departure.

Fernandez arrived from Benfica in January 2023 for £107 million, at the time a British record, and was made vice-captain immediately on a contract running until 2032. The 25-year-old won the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina, earning the Young Player of the Tournament award, claimed the 2024 Copa América, and scored in Chelsea's 4-1 Conference League final win over Real Betis in 2025. With 150 appearances for the club and six years remaining on his deal, the question of his long-term future at Stamford Bridge will not be settled by a two-game ban.
