Couple's home proposal after Italy trip goes viral with 7.6 million views

A home proposal after a 10-day trip to Italy pushed Sydney Burger and Joe Fromer into the center of TikTok attention, where their engagement video picked up more than 7.6 million views and sparked a debate over what a proposal is supposed to look like. What was meant to be a private surprise became a public performance, judged by millions of strangers after the clip was shared this month.

Fromer said he wanted the moment to be especially unexpected because Burger said he is a detective and is usually hard to surprise. During the Italy trip, he bought her shoes as a red herring so she would not suspect he was planning to propose, even though she thought a ring might be hidden inside the package. The misdirection worked long enough to carry the surprise all the way home.

Instead of proposing overseas, Fromer waited until the couple returned to their apartment after a 10-hour flight. Two of their best friends helped turn the apartment into the backdrop for the moment, decorating it with sunflowers and candles. They also set up a webcam so family and friends could watch live as Fromer knelt down and proposed with a sparkling ring.

Burger said the response online went beyond the engagement itself and became a discussion about how a proposal should be staged. She said the video “provoked a lot of discourse around what a proposal should look like,” but added that she loved how the engagement turned out and that it was “perfectly us.” For Burger, the Italy trip was never the point: an aesthetic destination proposal simply was not their style, and the apartment scene delivered exactly the kind of surprise the couple wanted.
