Driver, Protester Hurt After Black Bloc Blocks Downtown Eugene Intersection
Shane Alexander Novak, 19, was hospitalized after jumping on the hood of a black SUV at Sixth and Pearl in downtown Eugene; the Eugene woman driver in her 30s also was treated and taken to hospital.

Shane Alexander Novak, 19, of Pflugerville, Texas, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after jumping on the hood of a black SUV that was trying to pass through a crowd at Sixth Avenue and Pearl Street next to the Eugene Federal Building, and the vehicle’s driver, a Eugene woman in her 30s, suffered facial injuries and was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
Eugene Police Department spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin said the violent escalation began around 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 28 when a black SUV attempted to go through a group of Eugene Black Bloc protesters blocking the roadway; “the driver accelerated when a person who was on the hood of her vehicle began hitting and damaging the windshield before he fell off,” a description carried in Register‑Guard and syndicated outlets. KEZI reports officers were dispatched around 8:00 p.m., while also noting the confrontation began earlier as demonstrators gathered and obstructed vehicles.
Eugene‑Springfield Fire treated Novak at the scene and transported him to a hospital after he fell from the hood, KEZI and the Register‑Guard reported. The driver was evaluated by medics at the scene for facial injuries sustained when she was struck in the face while her window was down, then taken to a local hospital for additional care, the Register‑Guard and Yahoo syndication said.
Authorities issued criminal citations to Novak: Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree (also reported as Second‑Degree Criminal Mischief) and Disorderly Conduct, according to the Register‑Guard and KEZI. No charges or citations for the driver have been reported in the coverage so far; booking records and formal charging documents have not been released.
The day’s demonstrations at the Eugene Federal Building were described in multiple ways: Yahoo characterized some daytime actions as protests against ICE and the Trump administration, while the Register‑Guard and KEZI said the nighttime escalation occurred during a protest “in opposition to the joint U.S. and Israeli military operation in Iran.” A person identifying herself as “Kathleen with Black Bloc” told the Register‑Guard protesters were shutting down streets “as long as this is the way our country is going, there will be no business as usual.” Register‑Guard coverage also noted that “Black bloc is a tactic involving protesters dressing in black clothing and masks to avoid being identified.”
KEZI reported police were responding to a large group of about 30–60 people blocking W Sixth Ave and Pearl St. McLaughlin told the Register‑Guard there were also reports of damage to other vehicles during the road blockade.
Investigators have not publicly released additional details about the driver’s identity beyond “a Eugene woman in her 30s,” nor about video or witness evidence that could clarify intent or the vehicle’s movements; the Register‑Guard and KEZI coverage list those items as outstanding. Eugene Police continue to investigate the Feb. 28 incident and the only criminal actions reported to date are the citations issued to Novak.
