Explosion at Jiapeng biotech in Shanxi kills eight workers
An early-morning blast at a small biotech in northern China killed eight people and prompted an official probe and detention of the firm's legal representative.

An explosion at Jiapeng Biotechnology in Shanyin County, Shuozhou, Shanxi province, in the early hours of Feb. 7 killed eight people, state news agency Xinhua reported, prompting a local investigation and the detention of the company's legal representative. Xinhua first reported seven dead and one missing before updating the toll to eight as rescue and recovery operations continued.
Xinhua reporters at the scene described "dark yellow smoke was seen billowing from the accident site." State and local outlets said the company "is located in a mountain hollow" in a mountainous area more than 40 kilometers from the county seat; Shanyin County lies roughly 400 kilometers west of Beijing. Emergency teams continued cleanup and search operations, with local command reporting that crews had conducted systematic sweeps of the workshop and surrounding terrain.
Local reporting cited by state outlets described the sequence of rescue efforts. "By 10 am Saturday, the first round of rescue efforts had found five trapped individuals, all of whom were confirmed dead," the account said. "Rescuers expanded the search area, conducting a grid-by-grid sweep of the site and surrounding areas, while cross-checking information related to on-site operations and the company’s actual controller." Subsequent work "led to the discovery of two additional victims in the deeper sections of the workshop ruins and surrounding areas," the reports added.
Authorities have moved quickly to take the company representative into custody and to begin an inquiry. "The legal representative of Jiapeng Biotechnology has been detained," state media reported, and "the city has set up an accident investigation team" to determine the cause of the blast. Officials have not released a public account of the underlying cause, and Xinhua said the cause "was not immediately clear."
Public records show Jiapeng Biotechnology was founded in June 2025 and lists research on animal feed, coal products and building materials among its registered business activities. The firm does not appear to maintain a public website, and no formal contact information was available in the initial reporting, complicating outside verification.

The location and nature of the facility, a small production workshop in a remote, mountainous hollow, underlines broader governance challenges for regulators overseeing industrial and research operations outside major urban centers. Local authorities have emphasized an immediate on-site response and an administrative investigation; the legal representative's detention signals potential regulatory or criminal scrutiny depending on investigators' findings.
For families and communities in Shanyin County, the blast will raise immediate questions about workplace safety, emergency preparedness and the oversight of fledgling industrial firms. The investigation team in Shuozhou will be tasked with determining whether lapses in safety management, hazardous materials handling or other failures contributed to the explosion, and whether further detentions or prosecutions are warranted.
State media said cleanup and emergency response efforts were ongoing. Officials have not released the names of the deceased, the number of injured, or a timetable for the investigation's findings.
