Fortuna Public Library Reopens March 3 After ADA Renovations

Fortuna Public Library will reopen to the public at noon on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 753 14th St., Fortuna, after a months-long Americans with Disabilities Act compliance project that forced the branch to operate from a classroom at Rohner Recreation Hall, 5 Park Street in Rohner Park beginning in November 2025. Fortuna librarian Violet McCrigler said she is “very grateful to our partners at the city of Fortuna for graciously providing us a temporary location,” and that staff moved “a curated selection of our most popular titles” so weekly story times and inter-branch requests could continue.

The renovation work targeted core accessibility and interior upgrades. The Times-Standard reported the project scope included “reconstruction of two single-user, all-gender restrooms to meet ADA requirements, reconfiguration of the circulation desk to improve accessibility and layout, creation of an enhanced teen section, and full interior refurbishments, including but not limited to new paint and flooring.” Alameida Architecture is credited with the design work for the remodel.

Contracting and budget details remain defined by earlier reporting. The Times-Standard reported the construction contract was awarded to Adams Commercial General Contracting, Inc., of Eureka, and estimated the project cost at approximately $350,000, with the County of Humboldt and the City of Fortuna identified as partners on the project.

The project was approved by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 23, 2025, and the Times-Standard reported construction was anticipated to start on or around Nov. 1, 2025 and to take about three months. County communications now set the public reopening for March 3, 2026; sources provided in reporting do not supply an explanation for the variance between the initially reported three-month window and the current schedule.

County officials caution patrons that some minor work will continue after reopening. A Humboldt County press release states, “Over the next few weeks, Fortuna library patrons may see some remaining work ongoing, including minor projects like door replacement and installation. The majority of this work is expected to take place outside the library’s public hours to minimize disruptions for library visitors.” Humboldt County online guidance for ADA projects separately notes remaining work on similar projects is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends.

Humboldt County Director of Library Services Chris Cooper said in the county release, “We are really looking forward to returning to a much more accessible and improved library. This project would not have been possible without the collaboration of the City of Fortuna, the County Administrative Office’s ADA Compliance Team, and our dedicated library staff and partners, who have all been focused on reopening the library on time so the community can enjoy the new space.
