Founders Angel and Bob Dobrow Sell Zenith Bookstore to Manager Sarah Brown
Founders Angel and Bob Dobrow sold Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth to manager Sarah Brown, keeping the neighborhood bookstore under local leadership.
Zenith Bookstore will remain a neighborhood anchor as founders Angel and Bob Dobrow hand ownership to longtime manager Sarah Brown, the couple announced this week. The sale preserves a business credited as “one of the signature successes of the city's retail scene in recent years” and promises continuity for customers, events and local foot traffic.
Sarah Brown has been the Zenith Bookstore buyer and store manager for over four years, and Other Press reports she “has worked at indie bookstores around the country for more than 20 years.” The Dobrows said the transfer is intended “to continue the vision and values of the shop,” naming Brown as the person dedicated to that continuity: “Sarah Brown, who has been the Zenith Bookstore buyer and store manager for over four years, is dedicated to continuing the vision and values of the store,” the owners wrote in a release. Other Press adds that “the bookstore will change hands officially on February 11.”
Angel and Bob Dobrow framed the sale as part of retirement plans. The owners noted they hope to spend more time with family but “have no plans to leave Duluth,” and they described this as a “real” retirement. The Dobrows said they will “remain invested in the store’s success in the months ahead and will do everything they can to assist Brown and her team.” They closed their announcement with appreciation: “We send all our love, appreciation and profound gratitude to our customers and community for supporting us throughout this remarkable journey.” Reflecting on the shop’s roots, the owners recalled that “when we bought the Central Avenue building and began construction in the summer of 2016, we never expected that we would literally 'strike gold,' not financially, but in the amazing community we found in West Duluth.”
Zenith’s history of community engagement helps explain why the handoff matters locally. The store has added murals inside and out, hosted Independent Bookstore Day celebrations, and joined area businesses in political solidarity when it closed on Jan. 23 in support of protesters opposing ICE activity in Minnesota. The scene of independent bookstores in Duluth has experienced several recent ownership shifts: Chester Creek Books changed hands at the beginning of 2025, and Amazing Alonzo Bookstore passed to Eric Plumb after the 2022 death of owner Barb Plumb. Independent booksellers nationwide report shoppers check prices on phones but often choose to support local stores; Shelf-awareness noted, “I see people on their phones trying to find out if a book is cheaper somewhere else. But in the end, they want to support local versus Amazon, even if they know they're paying a few dollars more.”

Economically, employee-led purchases like Brown’s reduce the risk of closure and preserve local spending that benefits nearby businesses, landlords and event partners on Central Avenue. The Dobrows’ continued involvement through a transition period should smooth operations and retain community programming that drives repeat visits and tourist word-of-mouth. Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed.
What comes next for readers is largely continuity: Sarah Brown steps into ownership with deep bookstore experience, the Dobrows remain nearby to assist, and Zenith’s calendar of events and community presence is expected to continue. The official change of hands is set for February 11, and customers can expect familiar faces and programming even as the shop turns the page under new ownership.
