Gang members armed with an AR-15-style firearm and two handguns opened fire into a courtyard baby shower on the 2000 block of South Sprague Lane in Anaheim on the evening of Feb. 28, wounding four people and setting off a multi-city manhunt that ended with four arrests within 72 hours.

Anaheim Police Department investigators determined that four gang members confronted rival gang members who were attending the baby shower in the courtyard when they opened fire into the crowd. Three juvenile male gang members were struck and transported to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and listed in stable condition. An adult bystander was also hit but was treated at the scene and did not require further medical attention. The suspects fled on foot before patrol officers arrived, according to APD Sgt. Matt Sutter, who said the shooting occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. between Orangewood Avenue and Gene Autry Way.

The investigation moved quickly across county lines. On March 1, investigators located and arrested two suspects in Whittier. During those arrests, officers recovered an AR-15-style firearm and an unserialized black semiautomatic handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, along with additional ammunition recovered during a search warrant served at a nearby residence. The remaining two suspects were arrested the following day in Santa Ana, where another search warrant yielded additional evidence.

Three of the four suspects are juveniles whose names have not been released. The fourth, 18-year-old Zine Jassim of Anaheim, was booked into Orange County Jail. All four face charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy, weapons violations, and gang enhancements.

"Those who threaten the safety of our community will be held accountable."
