Four Tet quietly released music under an unsearchable alias on Bandcamp

Four Tet released an eight-track album under his wingdings-style alias that first surfaced on vinyl in June and then reached streaming services in July. The project belongs to Kieran Hebden, who has used the alias for a string of releases that frustrate search engines, metadata systems and even the basic idea of a stable artist name.

Apple Music’s page for Parallel says Hebden began quietly and anonymously posting tracks on Bandcamp in 2017 under the hard-to-search-for moniker. Over the next couple of years, five releases appeared under the alias before Parallel arrived in 2020 as Hebden’s second album of that year, following Sixteen Oceans. Apple Music also identifies Parallel as self-released, which fit the project’s stripped-down, low-visibility rollout.

That pattern was already visible in 2019 and 2020. The Fader described a new EP under Hebden’s unintelligible webding alias in October 2019, and Resident Advisor said it was the first new music under the name since 2017. Resident Advisor also noted that the titles were made up of unpronounceable symbols as usual. In May 2020, Hypebeast and Consequence reported another surprise EP under the same alias, with Consequence saying it contained four brand new songs.

The alias became even harder to pin down because it did not behave like a normal streaming-era release. Hebden’s music has shown up with different renderings across YouTube Music, Apple Music and Bandcamp, turning a release into a moving target for fans trying to search, share or simply name what they are hearing. The Line of Best Fit said Hebden had been slowly sharing the material via Twitter and a regularly updated playlist that also carried a symbols-only title, extending the same logic beyond the album page.

Hebden’s wider catalog shows that the alias is part of a larger habit of switching forms rather than chasing a single brand. Four Tet’s official site lists his presence across Spotify, Apple, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Discogs, and his work spans Four Tet, Kieran Hebden, KH, Percussions and collaborations including Kieran Hebden + William Tyler. Coverage of his 2024 album Three said he rarely gives interviews and has relied on a deliberate low-PR approach, a strategy that leaves room for projects like this one to circulate on their own terms.
