Fresno-area traffic stops recover guns, three pounds of meth, $238,500
A Merced CHP canine sergeant's traffic stop in Fresno County found three pounds of meth and $238,500 hidden in a car; separately, Fresno Police arrested 19-year-old Laquentin Townsel with a loaded 9 mm handgun.

A Merced CHP canine sergeant's traffic stop in Fresno County on Thursday led to the discovery of three pounds of meth and $238,500 hidden in the vehicle, and the driver was arrested, KMPH reporter James Mora wrote. “During the stop, it was discovered that three pounds of meth and $238,500 were hidden in the car,” the KMPH article states, and it also reported an estimated street value for the meth of $40,860.
In a separate incident, Fresno Police officers stopped a vehicle in the area of Tupman Street and Lorena Avenue on Friday and identified 19-year-old front-right passenger Laquentin Townsel of Fresno. “During a pat-down search of Townsel, police found a concealed and loaded firearm tucked in the front waistband of his pants,” KFSN/ABC30 reported; the firearm was described as “a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic handgun with 16 rounds of live ammunition.” Townsel was arrested without incident and booked into Fresno County Jail on multiple weapons charges.

The California Highway Patrol’s Fresno office separately reported a traffic stop that “resulted in officers discovering a concealed, unregistered, loaded firearm during the stop,” GV Wire noted in coverage of a CHP statement published Feb. 24, 2026. The CHP statement, as summarized by GV Wire, did not provide a suspect name, exact stop location or firearm make and caliber in the material released to the public.
CHP state posts documented another major interdiction on April 10 when a CHP K9 unit stopped a silver 2024 Buick Enclave on northbound Interstate 5 at Nees Avenue. Officers said they detected the odor of burnt cannabis and a probable-cause search “revealed approximately 13 pounds of suspected cocaine hidden in the rear cargo area.” All three occupants were arrested at the scene and the case was turned over to the Fresno High Impact Investigations Team; the suspects were later booked into Fresno County Jail on charges of possession of cocaine for sale and transportation of cocaine across noncontiguous counties.
CHP social posts also highlighted broader enforcement activity: since launching in February 2024 the CHP Oakland Safe Streets Task Force has recovered 3,217 stolen vehicles, arrested 1,823 individuals and seized 170 illegal firearms, the agency reported. Social-media posts connected to local stops included an Instagram line that officers “located a loaded .38 special revolver concealed on the suspect's person” and a Facebook admonition: “Traffic stop resulted in the recovery of a concealed, unregistered, loaded firearm. One bad decision can change your life in more ways than one.”
These incidents appear to be separate events: agencies, locations, calibers and quantities differ across the reports. Investigations remain active; suspects in the named incidents were arrested and booked into county custody while at least one case has been referred to the Fresno High Impact Investigations Team for further prosecution and evidence review.
