Frisco to Vote Feb. 17 on 2026 Priorities for Events, Infrastructure
Frisco City Council will vote Feb. 17 to finalize its 2026 "Progress in Motion" priorities, a package of events and infrastructure that will shape downtown activation and tourism this year.

Frisco City Council is set to vote Feb. 17 to adopt a 2026 "Progress in Motion" priorities list that city leaders say will steer major events and downtown infrastructure improvements during a year of heightened regional activity. The draft list, as reported Feb. 13, explicitly names Grand Park, Rail District activation and hosting a FIFA World Cup team among its top items, signaling how municipal attention and resources will be focused through midyear and beyond.
City officials and staff spent time on planning in January; reporting differs on the exact meeting date. One account says the council first met in a work session on Jan. 13 to outline goals for 2026, while another describes an all-day winter work session at UNT Frisco on Thursday, Jan. 16 that brought council members, public safety and parks personnel together. Frisco Enterprise photography noted Mayor Jeff Cheney discussing World Cup preparations with City Manager Wes Pierson as the city arranged celebrations and logistics.

Infrastructure projects anchored by a $68 million Rail District redevelopment are central to the council’s draft priorities. The Rail District package includes completed Elm Street work, Main Street construction that began in July 2024 and was estimated to take about a year and a half, a planned Fourth Street Plaza and a five-story downtown parking garage. Local planning documents and tourism materials project those components will be complete in 2026, with goals to boost walkability and add public gathering space downtown.
The local development calendar also includes large private projects that will affect Frisco’s economy and traffic patterns. Universal Kids Resort is described as a $550 million family theme park slated to open in 2026. Toyota Stadium is undergoing a $180 million renovation and is designated as a FIFA Team Base Camp Site for the June–July 2026 World Cup; Visit Frisco defines a Team Base Camp as “a combined training site and accommodation facility selected by national teams to use as their ‘home away from home’ during the group stage of the tournament.”
City tourism and event programming plans are already scheduled around that calendar. Riders Field will host Banana Ball on March 7–8, 2026 and the Cosmic Takeover Tour, a black light, neon baseball event, April 16–18, 2026. Frisco will also promote the National Soccer Hall of Fame and an FC Dallas Soccer Celebration during the World Cup window to attract visiting fans.
Local business and civic groups are aligning with the city’s timeline. The Frisco Chamber’s 2026 Development Summit is set for April 21 at Collin College Conference Center – Frisco Campus, with panelists including Ben Brewer of HALL Group, Tim Campbell of The Mix and Dan Cuffe of Universal Kids Resort. The Chamber’s offices are at 6843 Main St, Frisco, TX 75034; phone (972) 335-9522; email info@friscochamber.com for event and sponsorship information. Regional coverage of entertainment investments underscores the area’s push to become a destination; former McKinney mayor George Fuller said of a neighboring entertainment venue, “This venue puts McKinney on the map as a national hub for live entertainment. It will serve as a cultural anchor, expanding access to the arts and inspiring young creatives to dream bigger. It is a bold, forward‑looking investment in who we are and who we want to become.”
For residents, the Feb. 17 vote will clarify which projects receive formal council backing and set priorities that affect public safety operations, traffic management, permitting and downtown construction schedules through 2026. Expect concentrated construction activity downtown, concerted event planning tied to the World Cup, and a summer surge in visitors if Frisco’s base camp and venue activations proceed as planned. Watch the City Council agenda packet and meeting record following the Feb. 17 vote for the final language, timelines and any budget implications.
