Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 was climbing for Los Angeles when it struck a pedestrian on Runway 17L at Denver International Airport, setting off a brief engine fire and forcing an emergency evacuation late Friday night. The aircraft carried 224 passengers and 7 crew members.

The collision happened at about 11:19 to 11:20 p.m. local time on May 8, 2026. Officials said the person who died had jumped the airport perimeter fence and was hit about two minutes later while crossing the runway. The person has not been identified and is not believed to have been an airport employee.

Inside the cockpit, the crew reported an engine fire and smoke. One pilot’s voice captured the chaos: “We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire.” Passengers later described hearing a loud bang, then seeing flames or an explosion near the engine before thick smoke filled the cabin.

Frontier said the plane was evacuated because of smoke in the aircraft after the collision. Travelers used emergency slides to get off the jet, then were bused back to the terminal. Airport officials said 12 people reported minor injuries and 5 were taken to local hospitals.

An official said the person was at least partially consumed by one of the engines, which helped trigger the fire. The runway was closed during the investigation and reopened the next morning.

The Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, Denver Police Department and Denver International Airport are all investigating how the breach happened and how the emergency unfolded. Aviation analyst Greg Feith said the intrusion into an international airport’s operational area was highly unusual and raised serious questions about how someone got over the 12-foot fence topped with razor wire.

The sequence now under review is stark: a fence breach, a runway crossing, a direct strike and a fire inside the aircraft, all within minutes. What remains at issue is whether the airport’s perimeter security and emergency coordination broke down before the first alarm even reached the terminal.
