Gainesville Opens Eight Pickleball Courts at Tom Petty Park After $2.6M Renovation
Gainesville opened eight new pickleball courts at Tom Petty Park, 501 NE 16th Ave., part of a $2.6 million renovation funded by the WSPP half-cent sales tax.

Eight newly completed, dedicated pickleball courts at Tom Petty Park are now open to the public at 501 NE 16th Ave., Gainesville, part of a $2.6 million renovation project the city announced as ready on March 2, 2026. The City of Gainesville and Wild Spaces & Public Places posted that the courts are available for play while crews finish remaining park work and officials plan a spring ribbon-cutting once final renovations are complete.
The renovation package included more than pickleball courts. WCJB and city posts list reopened tennis courts with a new shade canopy, new seating areas, LED lighting, a multipurpose trail and additional shade structures. Crews are still working on a larger facility that will house storage, restrooms and concessions, and park managers say trail lighting is planned to connect the north and south ends of the 22-acre site.
City Commissioner Bryan Eastman welcomed the investment, saying, "Tom Petty Park is one of our most beloved neighborhood parks, and it’s great to see it getting the investment it deserves." Acting Wild Spaces & Public Places Director Rachel Mandell highlighted the lighting upgrades, saying the new lighting "extends activity into evening hours" and that "upcoming trail lighting will provide safer pedestrian connections between the north and south ends of the park."
Funding for the renovation came through the voter-approved Wild Spaces & Public Places half-cent sales tax, commonly called WSPP, which the city cited as the source for the $2.6 million project. WCJB coverage and city social posts confirmed that the eight courts are now open to the public and that the funding came from the WSPP program.

Parking and neighborhood access became a focal point during City Commission discussion of the project. Project plans had contemplated expanding parking from 81 spaces to just over 100, but the Commission voted against expanding the lot and instead urged staff to explore partnerships with neighborhood organizations and local businesses to increase options. Wild Spaces Director Betsy Waite warned that limited parking spots could prompt unsafe parking practices and suggested further expansion, while resident Mike Ryan Simonovich told commissioners, "At this time, there’s ample parking day and night all over the neighborhood" and called the proposal "a solution hunting for a problem that does not exist." The Alligator reported the park expects to draw over 100 visitors at peak afternoons and weekend hours.
The new courts close a planning loop that began in early 2024 when WUFT reported only four public courts were dedicated to pickleball in Gainesville. At that time city project manager Peter McNiece said, "Parks and recs around the country are struggling to keep up with the growing popularity of pickleball," and that Tom Petty Park would satisfy immediate need as the city planned designs and hiring. RADD Sports coordinator and USA Pickleball Ambassador Mary Rossow said the sport "It’s just exploding" as local participation rose, a trend visible in youth events such as the clinic featuring 11-year-old Camden Cuffe captured in earlier coverage.
Officials have left several specifics open as work finishes: WCJB noted crews remain on site and a ribbon-cutting is planned for spring, but the city has not published an exact date, a final parking-space count after renovations has not been confirmed, and the completion timeline for the storage, restrooms and concessions facility has not been released. With LED lighting installed and eight courts available for play, organizers expect increased evening play and continued demand while the remaining facilities and trail lighting are completed.
