Gunfire at White House Correspondents’ Dinner Forces Trump Evacuation from Ballroom
Gunfire outside the Washington Hilton sent Donald and Melania Trump out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner ballroom and into Secret Service protection.

Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were rushed out of the ballroom at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night after gunfire was reported near the hotel’s lobby and security screening area, abruptly cutting short one of Washington’s most closely watched political gatherings.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner had been underway for about 45 minutes when loud sounds were heard from outside the ballroom. Inside the venue, the disruption briefly created confusion before security officers moved to evacuate the president, the first lady and other protectees. Officials said one suspect was taken into custody.
Trump and Melania Trump were later reported safe and uninjured. The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting the president, the vice president, their families, former presidents and their spouses, and events of national significance, led the evacuation and the response inside the hotel.
The shooting was tied to the area outside the ballroom, near the Washington Hilton’s lobby and screening point, rather than to the dinner floor itself. That distinction mattered as the event, which draws journalists, politicians and celebrities to Washington each year, was first allowed to continue briefly before organizers scrapped it for the night.

The dinner was not completed as planned. What began as a high-profile evening in Washington, D.C., quickly became a security operation centered on the movement of protectees, the custody of a suspect and the sealing off of the hotel as authorities sorted out the threat.
The episode comes against an already tense backdrop for presidential security, underscoring how quickly a public event can turn into an evacuation in a city where the president and first lady remain among the most heavily guarded figures in the country. At the Washington Hilton, the line between the noise heard inside the ballroom and the danger outside the screening area was drawn in minutes, not hours, and the event ended with the room cleared and the night shut down.
