HCSO Deploys Bomb Squad to Bay Area for Super Bowl LX
Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office bomb-squad members were sent to the Bay Area to guard Super Bowl LX events, part of a multiagency security effort with statewide and federal partners.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office bomb-squad personnel traveled to the San Francisco Bay Area to support public-safety operations tied to Super Bowl LX, with deputies stationed near the Moscone Center to guard the Super Bowl LX Experience. Deputy Sheriff Foy Melendy and Corporal Nathan Cumbow were identified in agency photos showing them outside the convention center, with Melendy posed beside a sculpture bearing the Super Bowl LX logo.
The HCSO described the deployment on its Facebook page. “The Humboldt Sheriff Bomb Squad rolled down to the Bay Area to assist with security operations around Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara and related events across the region,” the post said. “As part of a multiagency effort to protect fans, teams and the public, specialized units like bomb squads and explosive detection teams conduct proactive sweeps and stand ready to respond to suspicious items so everyone can enjoy the game safely!”
The local deployment was one element of a wide regional security posture. Reuters reported that 35 agencies were involved in securing the National Football League title game and related events, and that authorities expected more than one million people to attend the Super Bowl or the high-profile parties that precede it. Federal assets in the air included a Nuclear Emergency Support Team helicopter equipped with radiological detection gear that was observed flying at roughly 100 feet, Department of Homeland Security transport and surveillance helicopters, and Air and Marine Operations Airbus AS350 surveillance helicopters operating from an undisclosed Bay Area airfield.
San Francisco city officials framed their preparations as a months-long coordinated effort, activating an Emergency Operations Center and launching a District Attorney’s Office San Francisco Human Trafficking Task Force composed of local, state and federal partners and victim service providers. Mayor Daniel Lurie said, “Over the past year, San Francisco has proven we know how to keep people safe. And with 13 days to go, we are ready to have the eyes of the world on San Francisco for Super Bowl LX,” adding, “I always tell San Franciscans that my number one priority is keeping everyone in our city safe. And that will absolutely be my priority through Super Bowl week. We are prepared, we are coordinated, and we are confident that we will provide a safe, welcoming experience for our residents and visitors.” District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said, “I am confident that the SFPD and other law enforcement partners will ensure a safe Super Bowl week for residents and visitors alike,” and added, “My office is committed to holding accountable anyone who seeks to engage in criminal activity during these events.”

Marine security was also heightened. The U.S. Coast Guard told Reuters it expected increased pleasure-boat traffic around the Bay and possibly two large cruise ships during the week, prompting stepped-up patrols and coordination with other agencies. The geographic challenge of events spread between the Levi’s Stadium site in Santa Clara and dozens of venues in San Francisco complicates logistics - Levi’s Stadium sits about 50 miles, or 80.5 km, south of downtown San Francisco.
For Humboldt residents, the visible detail is familiar faces from county ranks helping to keep big-city events safe while agencies from local to federal levels work together. HCSO’s public post named Melendy and Cumbow but did not list a total headcount; the deployment underscores how smaller county units plug into larger security nets for high-profile events. As the region returns to normal, county officials and residents will likely seek confirmation of timelines and any operational impacts at home, while the multiagency posture remains the Bay Area’s immediate reality.
