The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation has scheduled 19 lane closures on Kaua‘i state roadways for the week of Feb. 15-20, and it advised that “In observance of Presidents’ Day on Feb. 16, there will be no contraflow or lane closures unless otherwise permitted.” HDOT cautioned that the closures are weather permitting and subject to change without notice.

HDOT’s advisory identifies closures across multiple corridors islandwide, naming Kaumualii Highway (Route 50) segments from Kōloa to ʻŌmaʻo, ʻŌmaʻo, Lāwaʻi and Hanapēpē to Makaweli; Rice Street (Route 51) at Nāwiliwili; Kuhio Highway (Routes 56/560) segments in Līhuʻe, Wailua, Anahola to Moloaa, Kalihiwai to Princeville, Princeville and Waikoko; Nawiliwili Road (Route 58) at Pua Loke; Highway 550 at Kōkeʻe; and Highway 580 at Wailua Homesteads and Kōkeʻe. The department noted that “A map of lane closures can be found online.”

Operational postings from HIDOT for the prior week illustrate the types of work drivers can expect to encounter. HIDOT’s week-of-February 7–February 13 bulletin lists a KOLOA TO OMAO night work single lane closure on Kaumualii Highway between mile post 7.5 to 8.7 by Kahili Wai Street and Piwai Reservoir on Wednesday, February 11 from 12 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. for cutting the grass. The bulletin also lists a HANALEI single lane paving operation on Kuhio Highway (Route 560) between mile post 3.9 to 4.4 from 9 p.m. Thursday, February 12 to 5 a.m. February 13 with alternating traffic routed through the open lane, and a WAIKOKO single lane closure between mile post 4.6 to 4.8 on Monday, February 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for soil nail drilling, grouting, and concrete work.

Rice Street work around Nāwiliwili appears in HIDOT’s postings as well: “Single lane closure on Rice Street (Route 51), possible in either direction, between mile post 0.1 to 0.7, in the vicinity of Lala Road and Mokoi Street, on Tuesday February 10 to Friday, February 13 from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. for asphalt reconstruction. Alternating traffic will be routed through the open lane.” HIDOT’s bulletin also contains a truncated entry for a Līhuʻe center lane closure on Kuhio Highway at Hardy Street and Poinciana Street described as a nighttime waterline replacement with a “No left turns will be allowed through the work area” traffic control note.

The Kauai Department of Water is running parallel projects that will affect traffic during February. The DOW and contractor Alpha Inc. advised motorists that “night work with alternating one-lane closures will continue in the Līhuʻe area through all of February 2026, weekdays from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.,” part of the Kūhiō Highway (Hardy-Oxford) Waterline Project. DOW also scheduled a water service shutdown in Anahola on Feb. 18 affecting addresses near 4373 and 4374 Anahola, and announced it will close its office at 4398 early at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13 to allow parking lot construction and concrete work.

Kauai County’s schedule shows related adjustments on county roads: the county’s notice states “Lane closures rescheduled for Kōke'e Road March 12 to March 14.” For historical context, event-driven closures also affect local traffic at times; race organizers for the Kauai Marathon warned that the Aug. 31, 2025 event required lane and road closures in Koloa, Poipu, Lawai and Kalaheo between 5 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Motorists should plan for multiweek and nighttime work, especially in Līhuʻe and on Kuhio and Kaumualii Highways, and heed the posted restrictions for Feb. 16. As HDOT emphasized, “Lane closure schedules can change at any time without notice. All projects are weather permitting,” and HIDOT reiterated that “Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice. All projects are weather permitting. A map of lane closures can be found here.” Check HDOT, HIDOT and DOW advisories for the latest schedule and the statewide lane-closure map before traveling.
