Health Officials Confirm Five Measles Cases in Rockwall County
Five measles cases have been confirmed in Rockwall County, all in one household; the initial case identified Feb. 5 has recovered and exposed family members are under 21-day DSHS monitoring.

The Rockwall County Health Authority posted on its website Feb. 13 that five measles cases have been confirmed in the county this month, and that “the four active cases involve family members living in the same household as the initial case. The original individual who contracted measles has since recovered.” The county’s update says the household is under public health oversight as the situation develops.
County officials and Texas Department of State Health Services epidemiology staff are monitoring exposed family members for a 21-day observation period, and “Currently, family members are self-quarantining. They are being monitored by DSHS epidemiology staff for a 21-day observation period,” the county release states. The Rockwall County Local Health Authority is “working closely with the Rockwall County Office of Emergency Management to ensure accurate and timely information is shared with city and school district officials,” the county quoted in news releases carried by local outlets.
The outbreak’s timeline began with the first confirmed case identified Feb. 5; KERA reported that the index patient “was likely exposed during recent international travel” and that the person “is no longer considered contagious.” Two additional household cases were reported Feb. 12, and the county’s Feb. 13 update raised the total to five after two more family members tested positive over the following days. Initial social posts and local coverage reflected the stepwise progression from three to five confirmed cases as public health investigators completed contact tracing.
Public health guidance in the county posting urged symptomatic residents to call their healthcare provider before seeking in-person care: “Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to measles and is experiencing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider before seeking in-person care.” The county also repeated vaccine guidance: “Individuals who are not vaccinated or are unsure of their vaccination status are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider about receiving the MMR vaccine,” and reminded residents that “Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles and can reduce the severity of illness if exposure occurs.” The Rockwall Times and Spectrum coverage reiterated that people fully vaccinated with two MMR doses have “a very low risk of contracting the disease.”
Health messaging framed the clinical picture and risk groups: KERA and Spectrum described measles as highly contagious, transmissible when “an infected individual coughs or sneezes,” with symptoms including high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, white spots inside the mouth, and a rash that “can develop 3 to 5 days after the first symptoms.” Reported higher-risk groups include young children who have not received both MMR doses, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those who are unvaccinated or unsure of their status.
Local context noted by KERA places this cluster alongside prior activity in Rockwall County; KERA reported the county had at least two measles cases last year and that one was “believed to be connected to the outbreak in West Texas that led to the deaths of two children.” The Rockwall County website announcement ran alongside routine county postings about Interstate 30 lane closures, Texas Independence Day and county projects, and The Rockwall Times page carrying the notice displayed a Feb. 14 publication date while also showing a separate Jan. 13 header line that duplicates the county text.
For more information the county directs residents to contact their healthcare provider or visit the Texas Department of State Health Services website, and media outlets including FOX 4 and WFAA have provided updates as the county’s investigation and DSHS monitoring continue.
