Humboldt County Sheriff Investigating Apparent Murder-Suicide in Weitchpec, Yurok Tribe Names Victim
Deputies found two people dead at a Weitchpec home; the sheriff’s office says the scene appears consistent with a murder-suicide and the Yurok Tribe has named one victim.

Deputies discovered two people dead inside a residence in the 900 block of Lewis Road in Weitchpec after responding at 8:47 p.m. on Feb. 3, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said, and investigators say the scene appears consistent with a murder-suicide.
“On Feb. 3, 2026, at 8:47 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff deputies responded to a residence located in the 900 block of Lewis Rd., in Weitchpec to a reported possible murder- suicide. Upon arrival, deputies located two individuals deceased inside the residence. Based on the preliminary investigation, the incident appears to be consistent with a murder-suicide. The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Division is actively investigating the incident and is working closely with the Yurok Tribal Police. [...] No additional information will be released at this time. Updates will be released as the investigation continues and as appropriate,” the HCSO statement said.
The Yurok Tribe subsequently identified one of the deceased as Celinda Gonzalez in a Tribal Facebook post, describing her as a “beloved Yurok citizen and community member.” The Tribe said Gonzalez was a devoted mother, the primary caregiver for her elderly parents and a Tribal employee who “advocated for mental health resources and suicide prevention in the Weitchpec area.” The Tribe noted Gonzalez worked as an administrative assistant connecting Yurok people with Tribal services and said the Tribal Council is “deeply saddened by this loss.”
The dual timeline—HCSO withholding identities pending next-of-kin notification and the Tribe’s public identification—raises procedural questions reporters and officials often clarify in cases involving Tribal citizens. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Division is leading the investigation with assistance from Yurok Tribal Police, and officials have said they will release updates as appropriate.
Local leaders and community members have reacted to the news. Weitchpec district representative Toby Vanlandingham urged people to check on friends and loved ones in a Facebook post, reflecting community concerns about grief and mental health supports in this rural area. The identification of a victim who championed suicide prevention has heightened attention to available resources and local supports.
The Tribe is offering immediate grief resources. United Indian Health Services grief counselors will be available at the Weitchpec Clinic, 23001 State Route 96, at 530-625-4300. Additional counseling is available through Shoshoni Hostler at 707-499-2574, and the Tribe said it will offer a day of administrative need for those grieving. Contact information for Yurok Tribal Police inquires is 707-237-5702 or 855-55YUROK ext. 9060. The county’s reporting lines remain open: the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251 and the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at 707-268-2539. The national suicide and crisis lifeline is 988.
For Humboldt County residents, the case underscores ongoing questions about rural public safety, intergovernmental coordination with Tribal authorities, and how communities support caregivers and mental health advocates. The Major Crimes Division continues the investigation; officials have withheld full identification pending next-of-kin notification and have asked anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office tip line. Future coverage will track coroner findings, the identity of the second deceased, and any further statements from the Sheriff’s Office or the Yurok Tribal Council.
