Superheros don't wear capes," said quilter Toni Waas. "They wear quilts!" Waas led a group of about two dozen quilters draped in their pieces during a Quilt Parade at Kukui Grove Center on Friday, Feb. 13, visiting outdoor diners and local merchants to raise awareness for the Kauai Quilt Show and Boutique.

The Kauai Quilt Show and Boutique opened Friday, Feb. 13 at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery in Lihue and remains open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Feb. 25. Several participating quilters are members of the Kauai Society of Artists, and the exhibition fills the KSA gallery with both full-size entries and a miniature quilt display installed on the gallery’s show windows, which features first, second and third place ribbons.

Organizers say the gallery display is "joined by more than 90 quilts that organizers describe as 'donation quilts.'" Donation quilts are provided by participating quilters and sponsors, and once sold the purchaser has the option of designating which local nonprofit receives 100 percent of the quilt’s proceeds. That fundraising model connects the show directly to community organizations across Kauai County while showcasing handmade craft.

Parade participants brought the exhibition into the public realm at Kukui Grove Center. Participating quilters visited Kukui Grove patrons using the outdoor dining facilities outside of the Bread and Deli Connection during the Quilt Parade, and quilter Toni Waas and other volunteer quilters "make a turn" following their visit to the newly opened Aloha Lemonade shop at the Kukui Grove Center. Photographs captured quilters showing off some of the many quilts available during the Quilt Parade at Kukui Grove on Feb. 13.

Adjacent to Jamba Juice at Kukui Grove Center, the boutique maintains the same hours as the show and offers shoppers more quilts and other practical, hand-crafted items created locally. The boutique location gives visitors a convenient shopping option outside the Kauai Society of Artists gallery while supporting local makers whose work ranges from lap-size quilts to smaller, practical textile goods.

Outside the island, superhero imagery and quilting intersect in commerce and hobbyist work: an Etsy baby rag quilt listing described a finished size of approximately 35 x 35 inches featuring characters such as Superman, Green Lantern, Iron Man and Spiderman; a Reddit r/quilting post by user Catheril documented a handmade Nova quilt made as a baby-shower surprise; and pop-culture coverage has noted the visual overlap between cloth costuming and superhero iconography. Those examples illustrate a wider quilting culture in which comic-book motifs appear, even if the Kauai show’s catalog does not list a specific roster of superhero-themed quilts.

Photos of the parade and boutique activity were credited to Dennis Fujimoto/The Garden Island. The Kauai Quilt Show and Boutique continues at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery through Feb. 25, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with the boutique adjacent to Jamba Juice at Kukui Grove Center open the same hours.
