King Charles and Queen Camilla to make historic US state visit in April
Charles and Camilla will cross the Atlantic for the first US state visit by a British monarch since 2007, with Trump set to press Iran, NATO and tax disputes.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will arrive in the United States for a state visit that is meant to do two things at once: celebrate continuity in the Anglo-American alliance and avoid looking like the monarchy has become part of Donald Trump’s political machinery. Buckingham Palace said on March 31 that the king and queen would make the trip in late April at Trump’s invitation, and Trump later confirmed the dates as April 27-30.
The visit will be the first state visit to the US by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II traveled there in 2007 to see President George W. Bush, and it will be the first state visit of Charles’s reign. It also lands in the middle of the 250th anniversary of American independence, giving the trip a heavy dose of symbolism at a moment when both governments are trying to manage a relationship that has been strained by recent disputes.
The itinerary is built to project royal soft power well beyond Washington. Charles and Camilla are expected to travel to Washington, D.C., New York and Virginia, with a White House state dinner, a private meeting between Trump and Charles and a rare address to Congress among the planned events. Reports also say Charles will attend a 9/11 memorial event in New York, a stop that ties the visit to American national memory as well as transatlantic diplomacy.

The politics around the trip are just as significant as the pageantry. Reuters reported that Britain hoped the visit could help repair relations with Trump after the Iran war, which it said had driven the U.S.-UK special relationship to its lowest point in 70 years. Trump told Reuters he expected to discuss Iran, NATO and the UK’s digital services tax with Charles, underscoring how far this state visit goes beyond ceremonial protocol.
For Charles, the challenge is especially delicate. He has visited the US 19 times as Prince of Wales, and his last trip came in 2018 for the state funeral of former President George H.W. Bush. This will be his first official visit to America as king, and it comes with scrutiny over how a constitutional monarch preserves the appearance of political neutrality while still serving as a symbol of national continuity. Royal sources have described the mission as “high risk, high stakes and high opportunity,” and that is exactly what this trip represents: a chance to reinforce Winston Churchill’s old idea of the special relationship without letting the crown look like a participant in day-to-day politics.
