Abbott Library will launch a multiweek Great Decisions foreign policy discussion group beginning Monday, Feb. 9, with biweekly Monday evening meetings at 6:00 PM through June 1. The Town of Sunapee is urging residents to register promptly because “spaces are very limited in the group, so register today by visiting our event calendar.”

The series will meet in the Abbott Library Activities Room at 11 Soonipi Circle, Sunapee, NH 03782. The library’s event listing shows sessions in the Activities Room at 6:00-7:00 PM; town and community calendar postings list meetings as beginning at 6 PM. Project Sunapee notes that the first meeting on Feb. 9 will be an information and packet pickup session to introduce attendees to the Great Decisions format and to let participants meet each other.

Organizers describe Great Decisions as a civic-education program built around a briefing book and video series. Project Sunapee’s event text says: “GREAT DECISIONS 2026, 2/9/26, 6 PM: This program highlights the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans and works to engage citizens by learning about and discussing one of eight critical global issues identified by the Foreign Policy Association in a non-partisan, open environment. This program will begin Monday, February 9th at 6PM with an information and packet pickup session. This will introduce attendees to the Great Decision format, and let participants get to know each other. From there we will meet biweekly on Mondays at 6PM to discuss the various topics. Once you register, you will be registered for all the sessions. Participants are encouraged to attend all eight sessions but you may choose to attend only certain topics. REGISTER HERE: Great Decisions”

Local postings include material drawn from the national Foreign Policy Association guidance: “Great Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs. The name is shared by a national civic-education program, briefing book and television series administered and produced by the Foreign Policy Association. The Great Decisions program highlights eight critical foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. Great Decisions provides background information, current data and policy options for each issue and serves as the focal text for discussion groups.” FPA materials also describe “a national opinion ballot to communicate their views to Congress and the White House. Supported by the Foreign Policy Association for over 50 years, Great Decisions involves citizens in the foreign policy making process.”

Abbott Library’s online event entry highlights one chapter that will appear in the local briefing materials: “America and the World: Trump 2.0 Foreign Policy by G. John Ikenberry” and the listing includes the excerpt, “Trump’s return has marked a break from 80 years of U.S. foreign policy leadership, embracing an ‘America First’ approach. This chapter explores the risks of isolation and diminished influence in relation to Trump 2.0 foreign policy.” The library page also includes a visual note described as “book cover of Africa with various dates of discussions.” Local pages do not list the full set of eight topics in the extracts available.

Readers should be aware of a formatting artifact on the Abbott Library page that printed the event line as “Monday, February 96:00, 7:00 PMActivities RoomAbbott Library11 Soonipi Circle, Sunapee, NH, 03782.” Town and Project Sunapee postings reconcile that entry to a Feb. 9, 6:00-7:00 PM start time for the first session.

Because capacity is limited, register through the Town of Sunapee or Project Sunapee event calendar as soon as possible. Project Sunapee’s contact details are listed as PO Box 602, Sunapee NH 03782; info@projectsunapee.org, and its nonprofit boilerplate appears on the event page. For residents interested in civic education, public policy discussions and how global decisions affect local health, economy and services, the Great Decisions series offers a structured, non-partisan forum beginning Feb. 9, but seats will likely fill fast.
