Los Alamos County offices and services to close for MLK Day
Los Alamos County will close government offices and alter service hours Monday, Jan. 19, affecting transit, libraries, utilities and trash collection.

Los Alamos County posted an advisory Jan. 14 announcing that county government offices and many services will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The notice outlines modified hours for several public facilities and rescheduling for some essential services, information residents should factor into holiday plans.
Most county administrative offices will be closed for the holiday. Recreation and library services will operate on reduced schedules: White Rock and Mesa libraries will be open 1–5 p.m., the Aquatic Center will be open 1–5 p.m., and the Ice Rink will be open noon–5 p.m. Golf operations will be closed for the day. These adjusted hours affect families, after-school routines and recreational programming that often fill weekday afternoons in Los Alamos.
Utilities business offices will be closed for regular customer service on Jan. 19, but county crews will remain on call to respond to emergencies. Residents should call 505-662-8222 for utility-related issues that require immediate attention. For life-safety emergencies, the advisory instructs residents to call 9-1-1; for non-emergency dispatch, the county again directs calls to 505-662-8222.
Municipal services with scheduled collections will also be affected. Environmental Services collection set for Monday will resume Tuesday, Jan. 20; residents whose normal trash day falls on MLK Day are asked to place materials out on Wednesday, Jan. 21. That one-day shift will require a short-term adjustment for households and businesses that coordinate multiple service pickups.

Public transit will pause for the holiday. Atomic City Transit will not run on Monday, Jan. 19, and normal service is scheduled to resume Tuesday, Jan. 20. Riders who rely on the transit system for work, appointments or access to town facilities should plan alternative transportation for the holiday.
The county advisory consolidates contact points and schedules to reduce confusion around the holiday. Residents can expect reduced in-person services but maintained emergency response capacity through county crews and dispatch. For the latest details and any last-minute changes, the county directs residents to its website at losalamosnm.us/News-articles/County-offices-to-close-Jan-19-for-MLK-Day.
This holiday schedule means adjusting errands, transport plans and service expectations for the week. Normal operations for most services will resume after the holiday window, but residents affected by the altered trash and transit schedules will want to mark Jan. 20 and Jan. 21 on their calendars to avoid missed pickups or rides.
